Disabled military veterans face a host of challenges—physical, emotional and financial. Nearly 1 in 4 (24.2%) veterans have a service-related disability, which can make it difficult to find jobs to support themselves and their families. According to the National Disability Institute (NDI), more than a quarter of Americans with disabilities live in poverty, and people with disabilities are nearly three times as likely to have "extreme difficulty" paying bills. Veterans like me are faced with these challenges everyday, especially when the service member has a disability. Unemployment can be detrimental to mental health. It is even associated with increased risk for suicide.

Hello, My name is Antonio and I served in the Marine Corps for 12 years and Ive done countless combat tours serving both in Iraq and Afghanistan. When I returned from combat every time, I felt like my job wasn't done. I felt like a piece of me was still trapped in combat. After serving my country proudly over and over again, it was time for me to get out of the military and start something totally different with my career. Upon being discharged from the military, I knew i wanted to do policing work so I attended Cal State and obtained my Criminology and Justice Studies Degree. After graduation I started applying for jobs within law enforcement. I was diagnosed with PTSD (100percent) within the VA medical health center, which made my dream of becoming a law enforcement officer come to a quick end.

After applying for several jobs, I didn't receive many calls which made me very angry, upset and I felt like a failure. Having a disability that you have to disclose on your application felt like a setup for me. I felt as though no one wanted a veteran who was disabled with PTSD to be apart of their staff. So I decided to go into business for myself. I want to open up a lounge for veterans who suffer from the same mental illness as I do. Somewhere were they can go to spend time with others who share the same personality traits as they do. Somewhere were they can come if they feel irritable, anxiety, fear. having suicidal thoughts, etc. This will allow me to do something that I love to do which is interact with veterans and not be overwhelmed with the constant drag of being overly stressed.

The lounge will have a lot of activities for the veterans, including a place where they can come to use medical medicine as well to relax. The whole purpose of this lounge is to put life back into veterans who have deployed and are service connected. Another addition to this start up is that veterans like myself will have the opportunity to be gainfully employed at the facility/lounge. Not only will your donation be put to use to open this business, but it will also provide resources and financial support to many veterans who are employed within the business as well.

I hope you have a blessed day and thank you for your time.
