The Root Slam needs YOUR HELP sending our team to the National Poetry Slam 2018 in Chicago. Last year, The Root Slam took 5th in the nation! This year, we are aiming for #1. Each donation brings us that much closer!
All regular Root Slam events are FREE. We do this so our award-winning open mic & poetry slams and writing workshops are always accessible to our most urgent community members. We do this because we trust that community members that are able to donate will pay it forward so we can continue to bring excellent artists and arts programming to Oakland.
When we send our team to nationals, it is with the trust that they will bring what they find back with them. All Root Slam team members lead free workshops for the community and share their award winning talent on stages throughout the Bay Area. An investment in The Root Slam team is an investment in the next generation of excellent arts educators, poet mentors, authors, and performers.

Founded in 2016 by Gabriel Cortez, Isabella Borgeson, Jade Cho, Janae Johnson, Natasha Huey, and Terisa Siagatonu, The Root Slam’s mission is to create an inclusive and socially just space to promote the artistic growth of the poetry community.
We want to be a place where poetry, creativity, and innovation thrive and artists support and challenge one another to grow. We encourage participants to bring new work and develop it to the point of excellence. We are guided by values centering the voices of Black, indigenous, and people of color artists; queer, trans, gender non-conforming, and women poets; working class/low-income, disabled, im/migrant and undocumented folks.
