In Presley's Words

How did you first get interested in TKD?

My sister was inspired to start TKD because of my uncle, who did ju jitsu and was an amateur wrestler. Then one day, someone asked me why I wasn’t involved in the sport too, and I replied: “Princesses don’t do TKD.” My mom overheard me say that, told me that was the wrong answer, and signed me up.

When did you start?

I started taking lesson when I was six years old. I am 11 years old now.

What inspired you to continue in the sport?

Not long after I started I asked if I could stay after my class to watch the black belts. They geared up and began to spar, my eyes lit up and I was captivated, this is what I wanted to do. I got approval from my parents but had to prove myself to my coach. For several weeks I worked on my kicks and quickly graduated from a white belt to a yellow belt.

Soon my coach said I was ready to start sparring class and and it has become my passion. I’ve been sparring since I was six years old.

What exactly is sparring?

In Taekwondo, sparring is called Kyorugi by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF). The majority of the attacks executed are kicks. Headshots score three points, body shots score two and a spinning kick scores an additional point.

How is it competitive?

Some tournaments vary but the sparring occurs in two to three rounds. Each round is 90 seconds of high intensity sparring. The game is mental just as much as it is physical. Endurance plays a huge role in the ability to stay strong through the rounds to claim victory.

How far have you ascended in this sport, in terms of competition?

To qualify for national level, you must travel to certain qualifying tournaments. Each national qualifier must attain Top 8 in one of these tournaments. So far this year, I’ve ranked first in three tournaments and second in one.

What would this money help you do?

This money would help send me to USAT Nationals in Utah, AAU Nationals in Fort Lauderdale, and an international tournament in Spokane, WA. I’ve already been to an international tournament this year in Salzburg, Austria, the Austrian Open (Note: The costs for this tournament are included in the fundraising goal).

In addition, I need to continue to train to ascend in my sport. I practice for three hours on my own, three hours in video-conference class and my parents take turns driving me eight hours round trip to train in Tampa with my coach each weekend.

Why is this important to you  I am working on building my ranking in the US and training to medal in the National tournaments. To accomplish this goal, I need to attend the tournaments, and also continue  to train in my sport.

Sending me to these tournaments will help me accomplish my dream.

Moms’ Message

Presley is driven and focused, not only in her sport but with her academics as well. She amazes her family every day with her self-discipline and continued aspiration of being the best fighter she can be. She takes every competition, win or lose, and turns it into a positive learning experience. It isn’t easy staying on top of her training schedule with work, school and her travel calendar but as a family we sacrifice our spare time and money to help our daughter in every way we can.
