The See Shell Swim Muskegon Lake event was a huge success. I swam nearly 14000 meters in a little more than 5 hours around Muskegon Lake, proving that swimmers can enjoy the lake while sending a message that encourages adapting attitudes of stewardship toward lake restoration. Our lake has come so far over the years, it is up to us to keep that trend of restoration going into the future. Furthermore, this message of protecting our watershed should be adapted on a global scale.
Thank you to all the kayakers, the Muskegon Lake Watershed Partnership, and everyone else involved. More photos to come!

Out of site isn’t always out of mind. Dumping waste into our lakes, rivers, and oceans destroys the beautiful gift that mother nature has bestowed upon us. Adopting an attitude that it is too late to save our local watershed will only make things worse. Instead, we need to realize that it is possible to improve our natural environment when we all work together. Muskegon Lake has gone from a heavily contaminated body of water to a swimming and boating destination thanks to restoration efforts brought about by the help of the community. The Muskegon Lake Watershed Partnership (MLWP) has been heavily involved in the restoration of several watersheds, parks, and access points around the lake, with drastic improvements being seen in Grand Trunk.
Michelle Rogalski will swim, while Muskegon residents kayak 10 miles along the Muskegon Lakeshore. This open water journey will have checkpoints near wetland habitats and parks that have been restored by the Muskegon Lake Watershed Partnership (MLWP). It will be a “Tour of Muskegon Lake” benefiting the restoration of Grand Trunk.
Our goal for this swim is to “Break the Barriers to Being Lake People” while raising awareness for environmentally friendly watershed practices. Help us improve access to clean open water for everyone!
This event will take place on Wednesday, July, 8th, beginning at 8am, with a rain check on Friday, July 10th. To donate, please go to: https://muskegonlake.org/about/donate-today/

My favorite part about tapering for a big swim is slowing down and appreciating the reason why I allow this sport to consume my life in the first place. Being in the water is my happy place, and living next to so many lakes to swim in is a dream come true. I’m so grateful for such a beautiful gift from Mother Nature. I will do anything to protect her precious waterways, including swimming around Muskegon Lake on Wednesday, July 8th.
So much has been done to restore the Muskegon Lake Watershed, and I would like to see every single person in this city really understand the gift we have in our own backyards. Please help us break the barriers to becoming lake people so that we continue to have public access for our friends and family in the community, for now and in the future. Every little bit of help matters.

Update on the See Shell Swim Muskegon Lake event: the route is going in a CLOCKWISE direction. This is a better choice for sighting, direction of current, and a number of other factors.

Well... never thought butt cream would make such a great sunscreen... It contains 40% zinc oxide and doesn’t come off in water even after a lot of scrubbing, so it’s perfect for sunny open water swimming! Definitely using it the day of the See Shell Swim Muskegon Lake event, raising awareness for access to clean open water for everyone.
