Cosmopolitan Early Childhood Academy - Los Angeles (CECA-LA) harnesses diversity to create dynamic learning environments and strategically engage parents with other partners in educational advocacy.
The advocacy of Cosmopolitan Learning Institute is rooted in and driven by equity.
Start Earlier --
By the time children enter kindergarten, socioeconomic and racial achievement gaps have already been defined, and continue to grow during the K-12 years. Research has shown that racial achievement gaps become evident as early as 18 months of age.
Increase Access --
Children from more affluent families can access the highest quality of early childhood schools, learning materials, and teachers. Children from more disadvantaged (predominantly Black and/or Latino) families are traditionally priced out of the market for the same types of schools.
Leverage Diversity --
Research has consistently shown that children in socioeconomically and ethnically diverse educational settings experience higher student achievement in language, literacy, and math. Equally as important are the richer peer learning experiences that have enduring long-term effects of greater social capital, employment opportunities, and ability to build successful cross-cultural relationships that reduce prejudices and social isolation of certain communities.
Collaboration with other stakeholders allows for stronger more inclusive advocacy that can increase equity in areas affecting education, children, and families beyond the walls of the classroom. Systemic change requires engaging parents and families, as well as community organizations, philanthropists, elected officials, and you.
Raise the Bar --
Teachers are critical to student learning. Research has shown that more experienced and/or higher skilled teachers choose to work in schools that serve more affluent students and families. Children and families in more disadvantaged neighborhoods are traditionally priced out of access to those teachers and associated resources.
Los Angeles is stated to be the most cosmopolitan city in the United States. What better place to launch the first Cosmopolitan Early Childhood Academy sites than the City of Angels?
