Update #2

The Alumni Association and Hanna Education Foundation continue to raise funds for the high school Mural Preservation Campaign. As you can see here, $16,531 has been graciously donated either via Fundly or directly to the STHS Alumni Association. Great job everyone but please recognize we have more work to do. These funds, minus any Fundly fees, will be used to offset the costs of the HVAC redesign and the creation of commemorative items for alumni and friends to purchase, such as a photo book that many of you suggested.

On Saturday, 27, 2014 we will have a high school Murals Tour. The tour will begin at 10:15AM in the high school lobby. We are attempting to reach mural artists that wish to participate. The tour is FREE and OPEN to the public as a reminder of the campaign’s focus. We hope to see you! The event is posted on Facebook here https://www.facebook.com/events/259523657570646/ Share with your Facebook friends and groups.

If you have not made a donation, you may still do so. McClure Company graciously gave the school a year’s extension, so we will continue to raise funds through early 2015. Your tax-deductible check payable to “STHS Alumni Association” may be sent to STHS Alumni Association, PO Box 61474, Harrisburg, Pa. 17106-1474. Please mark “Murals” on your check. Or feel free to use the Fundly site, keeping in mind there are Fundly administrative fees.

We welcome all ideas from our extended ST community on future activities and preservation efforts.

A Very Special Thank You goes to Matt Rhodes, Class of 2001. Matt returned from a Kenya photo shoot to take the digital photographs over the summer. We are now in the process of cataloging the murals and their artists.

Thank You to all of our ST family who have offered advice and professional services.

We are Susquehanna Township proud!

More Info

For 43 years, students graduating from Susquehanna Township High School have been creating a mural that spans nearly the entire length of the first floor.  This mural represents the collective voice of generations of STHS students seeking to commemorate important cultural, social and political issues at the time of their graduations.  It has adorned our walls and helped to beautify the school and visually stimulate students and staff alike for years. Each individual piece is irreplaceable, priceless, and iconic. The mural as a whole represents the spirit and personality of a district that was once considered to be the best in the area - and still can be. Unfortunately, a construction project at the school slated for mid-June will destroy the legacy that many of our classmates and friends have created. Some of these friends are no longer with us, while others have gone on to do great things.  In order to SAVE OUR MURALS, we need to raise $189,000 by June 13 to allocate to a redesign of the new HVAC system. The school board had to make a hard decision, as the cost of the redesign was not part of the original bond and would have to come from the general fund. We recognize that a $200,000 hit to the general budget is not a prudent choice. Several concerned citizens, in a campaign spearheaded by Liz Simmons (class of 1999) approached the STHS Alumni Association and Hanna Education Foundation to enlist networking and financial help to SAVE OUR MURALS – and they have gladly accepted this challenge. We are confident that all of us...alumni, family, friends, community, and friends of the arts...will come together and HELP. Our ultimate goal is to preserve these murals both in their original state *and* have them digitized and reprinted.

WHERE WILL THE MONEY GO?Fundly does keep 3.9% of the total amount of money donated, and charges another 3% fee for credit card payments. Other than these nominal fees, the entire sum of what we raise will go to Susquehanna Township School District to preserve these murals. We have also been discussing the possibility of producing a coffee table book filled with prints of the murals, as well. Please note that if online donors prefer to have their money refunded, Fundly charges a fee that will be taken out of the total amount you originally pledged. If anyone has any questions, concerns, or suggestions for fundraising ideas, please direct them to either Liz Simmons at 717-579-1272 or John Fabian at 717-645-5430. If you are not comfortable donating online, you may send a monetary donation to the STHS Alumni Association in any amount to the following address: PO Box 61474 Harrisburg, Pa. 17106-1474 (Please note “Murals” on your check).

The Alumni Association is an IRS 501(c)(3) public charity, so your donation is tax deductible!

UPDATE 6/4/14:  BIG thanks to the McClure Company for their incredible support and donation of time, money and resources. We now have not quite such an uphill climb in terms of fundraising. But this isn't over, people! The School Board agreed to put the money into the redesign and the digitization on good faith that we as a community would continue to work to raise funds. Donations will go directly to the construction, but will also help to offset the cost of coffee table photo books and other ideas for preservation that are still brewing.

And if you haven't head of Marques Colston and the Harrisburg Stampede's tremendous offer to put $5 of every end zone ticket sold for the remaining three home games toward the Save the STHS Murals campaign - AND match that total WITH HIS OWN MONEY - please check out this site:

We hope to see you all there!!!
