Save Our Sis: Housing + Needs

From Itunuoluwa Ebijimi

As a result of landlord intimidation, I need to find a new apartment for my two roommates and I. A well-kept space with responsible managers is pertinent to my mental and physical safety.

Thank you so much for helping me reach my Fundly Goal! Through your donations and shares, I was able to surpass my goal beyond my dreams. I was even able to make 50 care packages for protesters and donate to other organizations and people in need.

My roommates and I moved out of our old apartment and are in a beautiful new place. We are settling into our new home and looking forward to growing here. 2 months ago, I could not imagine that I would be in such a beautiful space. I see now that deep down I knew it was possible, allowing me to call out to my community. Thank you for answering this call. I am so grateful. I have a renewed vigor and appreciation for my life.

More Info

My name is Itunuoluwa Ebijimi. People also know me by my aliases Petty and The Wife of Wrath. I am a deejay, interdisciplinary artist, and shea butter entrepreneur dedicated to uplifting the complex lives of all Black people.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I was released from one of my jobs at a public exhibition and I was furloughed indefinitely from my other job in the food service industry. All of my deejay bookings have been cancelled or postponed til Fall. I have also put a hiatus on Petty Butter, my small skincare business.

I have lived in my current apartment and paid rent every month for the last five years. Due to my lack of income, I have been unable to pay my bills and rent since April. Despite looking for work and applying to grants, I will not be able to meet these needs for the foreseeable future. On March 27, I told the current building manager, my landlord's daughter "L", that I was unable to pay my rent of for the foreseeable future due to COVID19. Starting April 10, my landlord and his daughter repeatedly asked me for rent, going as far as inquiring about the status of my stimulus check and unemployment insurance. I attempted to negotiate a rent decrease with L on April 23rd . L refused my negotiations and demanded the entirety of April and May rent by May 15th. When I let her know this was not possible, the next day via text, L claimed my roommates were unauthorized and that they had to move out. On May 2nd my landlord gave me a five-day notice. I believe he has the full intention of beginning the eviction process when the courts open up.

My landlord and his family have been very disrespectful to me over the years. They have called me big-mouthed and difficult. Additionally, years of lackluster maintenance and poor diy repairs has resulted in the building's degradation and a worsening pest problem. My landlord refuses to hire professionals to work on the building and his personal repairs leave problems in a worse state  than when he found them. There has been a recurring roach and rodent problem in the building and the landlord refuses to hire professional exterminators, laying traps and spraying poison himself. The issue has gotten so bad in the last couple of months that mice have started to get into my food. I have put up with these conditions for years because I could not afford to move out of this space, but I can no longer bear it. I currently do not feel safe in my living situation due to this type of intimidation by my landlord and the rapidly declining unsavory state of the building.

I am creating this fundraiser in order to ask for help for what I need, a new apartment for my two roommates, Tesh & Ty, and myself. A well-kept space with responsible managers is pertinent to my mental and physical safety. This apartment has been blocking me from growing for a while now. I know that once I am in a better space physically, both my personal life and artistic career will transcend rapidly. I am asking for community’s help pouring into me at this moment. I know I will give it back to my community ten-fold.

What yours donations will provide:

  • First month's rent and security deposit
  • Moving supplies and boxes
  • Moving Truck Rental
  • Cleaning Supplies
  • Small Appliances
  • Remaining funds will go towards rent as I continue to search for work during this pandemic
