Help My Ukrainian Cinematographer Build Local Bomb Shelter

Help My Ukrainian Cinematographer Build Local Bomb Shelter

From Chad Gracia

Help my best friend and cinematographer complete a local bomb shelter for himself and 20 others to survive Russian artillery attacks. He has made many anti-Putin films and dedicated his life to a free & peaceful Ukraine.

Update #4

Here is one receipt Artem sent me, he asked me to pass it on. I whited out his address for obvious reasons. This is for 255,000 hrivna, or around $8,500. For the rest, he bought on the black market and will provide photos. Thank you again!

More Info

My cinematographer of ten years, who was one of the reasons my first documentary (The Russian Woodpecker, which warned of a Russian invasion of Ukraine back in 2014) won the Sundance Grand Jury Prize, is stuck in a make-shift fall-out center. (There aren't enough in his town for everyone.)

His home has been marked for destruction by non-removable ultra-violet paint, so they are trying to convert a large empty pool into a bomb-shelter for the women and children in the immediate area.

Artem is one of my best friends and has one of the biggest and sweetest hearts of any man I've known. Right now I fear for his life. A few weeks ago we were happily editing our latest film, and now I don't know if he'll ever see the premier.

Please, anyone who was touched by Artem's work and wants to see him survive to continue making beautiful films, help us to finish this bomb shelter, which desperately needs:

- Steel for a roof (right now it's wooden) - A power generator - Portable toilet - Food & water for 20 people - Medical supplies - Walkie Talkies- Steel to reinforce their cars and windows- Welding equipment- So much more...

We don't know how long they will be there or if they will be attacked, but all the funds you donate will go to this effort (being led by men in his family) and the hardware will be donated to others in need if it turns out that his town is no longer in danger.  Artem hadn't slept for almost 48 hours when he made this video (he was trying to get his new wife outside the country), so he speaks slowly. But here are his words: "I don't want to have a war. For whole my life, I worked as a cinematographer. But I never touch a gun. Because I gave my word to myself: "My camera... Is my weapon."

Update #3

Artem has completed his shelter with your donations. Here is the truck dropping off generators, food, water, battery chargers, lights, medical supplies, etc. Most important was "blast proof" plates to cover the roof. These are the same plates that seemed to have saved lives in today's bombing of another swimming pool turned shelter in Mariopol. The most expensive thing right now is fuel, which they are using to drive people to the border and pick up supplies for others to deliver. For that reason, I'm going to keep this fundraiser open for those of you who want to continue helping. But at the moment, he is safe and you can focus your giving to others in more dire circumstances. Thank you!

Update #1

ARTEM BUNKER UPDATE
Artem is hanging in there. He's still building his shelter with the donations of the international community, and meanwhile, he's helped three people stuck in dangerous zones to get rides to the border. All while battling a sickness, most likely due to lack of sleep over many days. With fighters like Artem, Ukraine will rise again - strong and free. https://youtu.be/No4djFmQawg
