Who am I and how did I get here?

My name is Phillip Isom and I have a small automotive business in San Antonio, TX called Taegeuk Autowerkz.  I am 39 years old and a 17 year Army Veteran.  I've been married for going on 20 years in October and have 2 wonderful children.  I got married in 2001 and joined the United States Army in 2002.  I served for 6 years on active duty as an Electronics Technician where I served 2 tours to Iraq.  I served the remaining 11 years in the Reserves.

Taegeuk Autowerkz was initially started in 2013 as a cheap way for me to get parts for my own projects.  It did not take long for me to decide that I should help other automotive enthusiasts build their projects and dreams.  I started out like most small businesses, local and limited.  I eventually began promoting my business on social media platforms to get the word out.  My first customers were of course friends and co-workers at the time that wanted to build their vehicles and try to help out the small company.  A few years had passed and I then started a website for a broader range of customers.   There was never enough time for everything that needed to be done solely running a small business.

Over the years, i have had a small storefront and booths at local car shows.  Yet as a small business, there was only so much i could do.

2020 was also a tough year for everyone, ESPECIALLY small business owners.  Most businesses had to cut staff, cut hours or close all together.  I lost a HUGE supplier due to COVID which accounted for about 80-90% of my sales and income.  Many customers that came to me for those items, had to be turned away to a BIG company local to my previous supplier which also meant that they were going to pay top dollar compared to buying from a small business.

During the 8 years that my company has been available, there have been many setbacks which have prevented my company from growing and keeping the storefront doors open.  A small business can be draining mentally and financially if you don't have everything needed to function properly.Unfortunately the SBA does not really help sole proprietors so I am unable to take advantage of their offerings.

What do I currently offer to customers?

- Parts and Accessories for cars, trucks and SUVs

: Selection limited to direct parts requests from customers due to limited website product listings

Are there any risks and challenges?

There are always risks when owning a small business.  I have had many challenges over the past 8 years and the most recent pandemic has been one of the hardest. If my goal is not met, I will not give up on my company.  It just means that the time is not right at this moment. We do not know what is planned for us in life.  We should make the most of our journeys in life and make a positive impact as much as possible.

Not able to donate?

I understand not everyone can put forth donations too help out my aspirations as well as those of others.  If you aren't able to donate, i still greatly appreciate you sharing the word.  Thank you and God Bless.
