Reading with Rescues

Reading with Rescues

From Mary Shields

The Reading with Rescues program allows children of all ages to sit in front of a horse’s stall with a book and read out loud to them. This promotes empathy for animals and confidence in public speaking.

Who we are...

Hope Equine Rescue is a non-profit, located in Winter Haven, Florida dedicated to the care, rehab and re-homing of abused, neglected and starved horses.

What we do....

The Reading with Rescues program allows children of all ages to sit in front of a horse’s stall with a book and read  out loud to them. This simple act promotes empathy for animals, confidence in public speaking, improves reading and communication skills. It builds a love of reading. For the horses, they rebuild trust in humans, learn to be around children and encourages them to come to the front of the stall for interaction. A horse willing to approach a potential adopter increases their chances significantly. Even the most traumatized horses become curious to the little reader at their stall door.

What we need...

Rehabilitation and care of abused and neglected animals is a tremendous undertaking that cannot be done without community support and partnerships.

A Christmas of Hope... is our night to give back to our readers! We are planning an evening of fun by having the children read their favorite Christmas story to one of the horses, ponies or donkeys. A make-your-own hot chocolate bar and cookies will be set up for refreshments. Santa will be making an appearance in his own horse-drawn sleigh and be available for pictures with our photographer. We will be limiting this special event to 50 children but with help from you we could double that!
