I'm raising money for a library/ reading program in an elementary school (majority of students from low- income families). This program will include small reading groups and school wide reading activities.

   Reading is key because when students' reading skills (comprehension and decoding- ability to break down a word for ex. into syllables to read a word) are low, they can easily fall behind in school .   Reading is critical for students to succeed in all subjects including math and science.  Research shows that falling behind in school (at 3rd grade, when reading texts are longer and include richer vocabulary, reading gaps are even more evident )  can incrementally grow until it's too hard for students to catch up and can lead to behavior challenges and even dropping out of high school.  There's a link between juvenile delinguencies and low literacy (reading and writing) levels.  

***It is important to catch students early, expose them to a wide breadth of books to ignite their interests.   When students read what they like at their reading level, it's easier for them to develop reading skills.  In this reading program, adult volunteers and I will facilitate students to find books they want to read.  Students are reading about their interests, their cultures, current events and they can share what they read with others.  In this way they're also developing their expressive language (through dialogue, presentations, or writing) which is complementary to reading.      

Funds will be used for:


-ipads to access electonic books

-field trips to public libraries

-volunteer recruitment and training

-school- wide reading events

-office supplies

-positive reinforcement for example books for students to own and build their book collection at home (further encouraging reading at home which only strengthens reading skills)

-fun events to celebrate students reading growth (ex. watching a movie based on a book students have read)
