My name is Andre Frison, I am the co-founder and treasurer for Governing Hearts, a non-profit organization. My 57- year old uncle David surfers from mental disability. He was placed into a facility that we found was not a mentally stimulating nor an enriching environment. It was at this point, I quit my job as an Operations manager at LAX to be his full time caregiver. Since being home with family members, his overall quality of life has improved; his cholesterol has gone down, blood pressure decreased gradually, and overall temperament has elevated.

The University of Washington, Rehabilitation Research Training Center states, “One in six are born with some kind of disability and stigma has quieted these voices.” The mentally disabled are marginalized and placed into group homes, the same type my uncle was in. My experience watching my uncle’s progression with me is what led to the founding of Governing Hearts.

Governing Hearts strives to provide not just another group home, but an enriching, family like environment and community outreach. We will be utilizing a three tier approach to achieve our mission. Tier One- how we service our clients. Some of the services we provide are transportation, day activities, meal preparation, appointment setting and accompaniment. A part of our mission is to bring community to those that have been isolated.

Tier Two - supporting local small businesses. One of our partners include a Corona based advertising company. In the future, we will utilize local food vendors who will come and demonstrate their cuisine. We will hire Fitness consultants who teach weekly classes to stimulate physical activity. Thereby adding to the value of Governing Hearts.

Tier Three - Community outreach. There are two ways we will achieve our community outreach goal. The first is through our mentor program catered to high school students. The students will receive community service hours and letters of recommendation when applying to colleges which highlight an active role in their larger community. Second, employing the use of volunteers who are recent college graduates, allowing them to gain real world exposure related to their field of study.

Governing Hearts has a funding goal of $750,000 for 2019. The funds will be allocated towards the purchase of a 24- hour care facility, equipment, staff salaries, overhead costs and administrative fees. If you would like to contribute to our Governing Hearts’ mission, please visit us at
