Hello! Welcome to Rallying for Ryan's fundraising page. This page was set up by family and friends to help cover expenses occurred by his medical condition that was not identifiable until after birth.
As any first time parent, Abby and Andy were anxiously awaiting the arrival of their first born after a healthy normal pregnancy, when Ryan Michael Dornath was born on September 5th. The next morning, his great nursing staff noticed an abnormal change to his heart sounds, and after consultation with the doctor and a series of x-rays, Ryan was referred to Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse Wisconsin for further evaluation. This was Ryan's first experience with a life flight helicopter ride. Shortly after arriving in La Crosse, Abby and Andy received the unexpected, scary, and down right devastating diagnosis that Ryan was born with a "broken heart." Shortly there after, he was again life flighted to Madison, Wisconsin where he is under the care of the cardio thoracic surgery, pediatric cardiology, and pediatric intensivist teams in the PICU. Ryan was diagnosed with a ventral septal defect, no pulmonary valve, and a host of blood vessels that are not going where they should be. For those familiar with cardiac terms, Ryan's condition most closely resembles a scenario known as Tetralogy of Falot, but in true Ryan fashion, his exact condition has never been seen before, making the road to treatment extremely uncertain. Over the last 2 weeks, Ryan's heart has grown and changed, but in doing so has taken everybody along for the journey on a rollercoaster ride of sorts. As it sits currently, open heart surgery is a very likely possibility in the next week. Abby and Andy both have very supportive employers, but much of the time since birth will go unpaid, as the bills continue to accumulate. Our families have been blessed with great communities and friends that have wanted to show their support for this great young family. We established this fundraiser to help off-set some of the cost of medical care, but to also continue to spread the word of this amazing, tough little baby as he continues to fight.
