Gendo Pohon Damai is a Water Protector from North Sumatra dedicated to protecting the life systems of his homelands. Let's support him in his efforts to buy a new van to transport seedlings across the island!
Gendo is the founder of Pohon Damai, an ecosystem restoration and tree planting project in Sumatra, Indonesia.
This year Gendo plans to grow 25,000 seedlings over a period of 4 months, focusing on fruit trees as part of an initiative to help farmers replace harmful palm oil plantations with food that will strengthen the local economies and support the life of the forest.
Gendo needs support in purchasing a van to transport these saplings! Pohon Damai does not receive any money from the government, and therefore relies on small local and international community contributions to help support the great work that he does.
By making even a small donation to this page, your money will go directly to the planting of trees in North Sumatra, providing nourishment for the land, the animals, and the people that live there on the frontline of palm oil deforestation.
Over the past 4 years, Pohon Damai has helped plant 150,000 fruit trees & native trees in North Sumatra, as well as saving and releasing 42 Dayak fruit bats, one of the most threatened keystone species of the area.
In addition to planting saplings in the Earth, Gendo has focused on planting seeds with the children of the local villages, going to different schools to share knowledge & love for the natural world, and provide education to the community. The villages are directly involved in planting trees together and educating one another, reclaiming their roles as protectors of the life around them.
