We're all looking forward to a fun-filled weekend where we can catch up with old friends and also meet some new ones with which we share a strong common bond: brotherhood in the Alpha Omicron Chapter of Sigma Chi. I'm sure we can all agree that our time as an active member of the AO chapter has shaped the person we've become today (for better or worse!) and that none of us would be the same without our Alpha Omicron experience.
And what is one thing all AO Sigs share across the decades? 918 Broadway. The House has served the brothers of Alpha Omicron well over the last 50 years. It has stood up to the elements, for instance weathering Katrina not to mention plenty of abuse by its residents and guests, but age is taking its toll. The House needs our help.
That is why in 2008 the 918 Broadway Committee established a fundraising goal of $250,000 to return the House to a state that would be both functional and show the great pride we all have for the traditions we share. Thanks to the generous contributions of some 160 brothers, over $150,000 has been raised to date. With this support, the entire downstairs (bedrooms, bathroom, and hallway) have been completely renovated. The front of the house has been repaired, waterproofed, and painted. The upstairs were repainted and carpeted.
Now, we need your help to complete the next phase of the restoration project. Specifically, the House needs $50,000 for the following renovations: waterproof and paint the exterior, renovate and restore a working kitchen (the actives are not currently on a meal plan if you can believe that), renovate the upstairs bedroom and bathroom, replace existing furniture, and replace windows. We need an additional $75,000 to pay off the existing mortgage and to establish a small maintenance reserve fund.
The AO chapter is experiencing resurgence and improving the conditions of the House will help to further that effort. We want AO not only to survive but to thrive! It is our responsibility to provide the necessary resources for the AO chapter to flourish the same way that past loyal Sigs did for us. The brothers that enjoy the renewed facilities will do the same for future brothers. And the tradition will continue...
While of course first on our minds is the fun we will all have with one another come October, let's not forget what brought us all together in the first place: 918 Broadway.
Please contribute to this cause to once again make Sigma Chi the best fraternity at Tulane.
And to help explain to your wives why you still feel 20 years old and need to make this trip to New Orleans, a final excerpt from the memorial plaque that Manny Dobal ('91) created for Stefan, Victor and Murph in 2009: A reminder to all brothers to cherish your moments for they are fleeting. Do not take your time for granted and live with no regrets. And take with you on your journey these last words of wisdom:
