We proudly launch “Purple Playground Presents: Prince Academy” at High School for Recording Arts in St. Paul this August. The weeklong program will teach Prince history and host special guest speakers - scholars and musicians who worked with him. The 14 and 15 year old students will also write and record their own Prince inspired songs and take a field trip to First Avenue and Paisley Park.
Prince loved kids, and he was always giving. We've chosen a way to continue to give and bring people together in a sense of community again and raise money for kids’ music education to help everybody heal.
We've carefully chosen our subject matter - each day will focus on a Prince "era" and will explain how it was shaped by and shaped the world around Prince. The guest speakers are Prince "experts" - they've either worked with him as musicians or written books about him and all have histories directly connected to him and his legacy.
The students will learn about Prince and hear his music and compose and record their own songs in the studio - with professional engineers there to guide them. They will make real music by real musicians just as Prince preached.
We want Prince’s legacy to continue, and we don’t want him to be forgotten. He’s a fascinating person, and he’s a huge, important historical musician that should be studied. I wasn’t willing to let him go, and I’m still not, and I don’t think I ever will — because he’s still with us. All the music we have is incredible, and there are lessons of love that he taught us that don’t have to be lost.
We will succeed due to the generosity and compassionate support of our purple community.
