Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland (HFHMM) is re-launching its popular Pride Build program. Pride Build 2016 is a specialty build in which HFHMM celebrates Montgomery & Prince George’s County diversity by bringing together the LGBTQA community and friends to rehabilitate a distressed home in Prince George’s County, MD for a deserving, low-income family. Working alongside Habitat volunteers and partner families, Pride Build will help raise the money needed to rehabilitate the home. Additionally, volunteers will collectively contribute over 100 hours to the construction of decent and affordable housing for a hardworking low-income family in our community.

The HFHMM program is a hand up, not a hand out. Qualified applicants are selected based on residency and income requirements. Each family is required to contribute “sweat equity” hours to the building of their home, and attend seminars on financial planning and home repairs. Once the home is complete, it is sold to the family with a 30 year, 0% interest mortgage, where no more than 30% of their monthly income goes towards their mortgage payment. Before moving into their new homes, many of HFHMM partner families are living in substandard and often dangerous conditions where much of their income is spent on rent. HFHMM believes that everyone deserves an affordable place to live without having to suffer the negative effects of substandard housing.

In 2011 Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland and members of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area LGBT community made a commitment to help a qualified low-income family move out of substandard conditions and into a home they could own affordably. At the time HFHMM was one of only three Habitat for Humanity affiliates in the U.S. to launch a Pride Build program. By re-launching this program, we hope our efforts will change another family’s life permanently, and for the better while partnering with the LGBTQA community to make a positive impact in our community.

Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland is pledged to the letter and spirit of U.S. policy for the achievement of equal housing opportunity throughout the nation. We encourage and support an affirmative advertising and marketing program in which there are no barriers to obtaining housing because of race, sex, marital status, physical or mental disability, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, presence of children, source of income, sexual orientation, gender identity, age and family responsibilities.
