What Portland also has that no other city in Maine can boast is a thriving, vibrant musical community brimming with passionate and engaging talents of every genre. To date, there has not been an election day that has combined musical talent with the efforts of voting initiative organizations, the City of Portland, and local businesses. The time has come to unite the community to encourage citizens to use their voices, empowering them to participate in their government.
The City of Portland’s future success hinges on community involvement in every election, and while voter turnout in the 2016 presidential election reached 76.3%, Portland’s voter turnout in the previous two primary elections were dismally low, at just 10.4% (June 2016) and 18.9% (June 2014).
Some major hurdles to voter turnout are: education about polling date & locations, voter confidence regarding ballot questions, community perception of election importance, and transportation. As a city, Portland has many citizens and organizations vested in tackling these challenges, but have rarely seen those parties work together toward the common goal of getting voters to the booths like this- until now.
