More Info

I recently decided to leave Vietnam. Sadly, my refuge of the last five years has become an impossible place for me to live. Arbitrary and ongoing lockdowns were eating away at my physical health and emotional well-being. My visa was on a paper-thin month-to-month basis. The instability was also taking its toll. Leaving was one of the most difficult things I’ve had to do, as it meant leaving my small family behind.

Hoi An- the once bustling tourist town I was in - has become a shadow of itself. Most of the expats have been forced out by the government’s ever-changing immigration policy. There is no more tourism to speak of. Businesses are closed. For rent signs are ubiquitous. This has also made it difficult for my fiancé to make a living. She buys clothes and sells them in the open market. Business has dropped sharply as the lack of tourist money has made the entire local population short of cash.

I moved to Vietnam from Budapest, Hungary in 2016. My intention was to visit for three months, and it turned into five years. I met my fiancé, Nga, in 2017, and we’ve been together for four years. She has a son, Hoang Anh. He was seven years old when we met, and is now eleven. In the last two years, we adopted a dog - Grinch, and a cat - Marcy. I’ve been gone for more than two months, and we all miss each other desperately. I left on September 10, 2021.

When I left Vietnam, I headed to Tirana, Albania to find out if it could be my new home, and a place to relocate my family from Vietnam. After making friends and getting a feel for the local life, I am fairly certain Albania has much to offer. Great food, Mediterranean climate, sea, mountains, and a good location are a lot of what draws me there. It seems it would be good for Nga as well. There is opportunity to open a small business. Retail clothing is the main possibility we’ve discussed.

Meanwhile, most of my possessions have been in storage in Budapest. I traveled there to get warm clothes for the winter and make plans to get back to Tirana. Unfortunately, prices are high, and I am short of cash. I’ve been staying in a hostel as it is all I can afford at the moment. Rents for apartments are high, and I hope my stay is very temporary.

It is my hope to raise enough money to clear out my storage space and head back to Tirana. The best way to go seems to be hiring a moving company.

I need a home base. In Tirana I can rent a house for a reasonable price. When I have privacy, I can get to work doing medical and legal transcriptions as well as teaching English. Then on to the next phase - bringing my family to me.
