Update #11

There is a NEW winner in the Pitch For Cancer Research Corn Hole Tournament Fundraiser: Blake Johnson (Belleville, IL) and Henry Mendoza (Wood River, IL).

Mexican Johnson (as Johnson and Mendoza partnered under that team name) defeated the team of Josh and John Brownfield (Trenton, IL), going the distance in the best-of-three finale.

For their efforts, Johnson and Mendoza earned $200 as the top prize (money donated by Jim's Formal Wear of Trenton, IL). The Brownfields took home $100 (compliments of Lisa Sauer State Farm of Highland, IL).

The overall winner, though, was cancer research. I am most thankful for all the teams that came out to participate, as $1,800 was raised for cancer research.

The fundraiser was held in memory of three specific people who passed away too early in life due to cancer: Helen Andersen (Lebanon, IL), Ashley Furlong (Detroit, MI), and Mike Buss (Highland, IL). It is hoped that no more names need to be added to this commemoration list, as we need to find cures for this awful disease.

It's why this corn hole tournament is held: to help cancer research via Pedal the Cause. It is Pedal the Cause's mission "to provide critical funding for cancer research at Siteman Cancer Center and Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital through its annual cycling challenge." As it states on its website (www.pedalthecause.org): "It is our hope that research funded by Pedal the Cause will ultimately lead to a cure for cancer."

Defending champions Sylvia Jenzewski (Lebanon, IL) and Lori Mustain (Belleville, IL) did not reach the finals Saturday. What She Said (as was the team name for Jenzewski and Mustain) were dethroned but placed 6th. For their efforts, the two women were awarded a $50 gift certificate compliments of Trenton Processing (Trenton, IL).

Rounding out the teams and their finish:

Third – The Baggers, consisting of Michael Feldt and Jonathon Wheat. The two were awarded 2 free oil changes, compliments of Auffenberg Dealer Group (Shiloh, IL)

Fourth – Pete’s Bar and Grill, consisting of Philip Reinhardt and Tim Green. They also were awarded 2 free oil changes from Auffenberg Dealer Group of Shiloh, IL.

Fifth – Black Mombas, consisting of Brian Francoeur and Tyler Kuberstelf. They went home with 2 free oil changes from Auffenberg Dealer Group of Shiloh, IL.

Sixth – What She Said (Sylvia Jenzewski and Lori Mustain)

Seventh – Grapp Brothers, consisting of Chad and Jake Grapperhaus. The two walked away with two $25 gift certificates from Walmart of Belleville, IL.

Eighth – Bill Gus, consisting of Jared Gustavison and Billy Ernst. The two were awarded two $25 Amazon gift certificates, compliments of Nick Raetz State Farm of Trenton, IL.

Ninth – Bucks, consisting of the father and son team of Matt and Abraham Wilhelm. The two were awarded two $25 gift certificates compliments of & West of Trenton, IL.

Tenth – Kruse-ing for a Bruisin’, which was the husband and wife team of Tiffaney and Kyle Kruse. They were awarded two $25 gift certificates compliments of Dairy King of Trenton, IL.

Eleventh – Team Celsius, consisting of Jacob and Hannah Wilhelm. They went home with two a men’s and women’s Pedal the Cause ragian jersey, compliments of Pedal the Cause.

Twelfth – Shockers, consisting of Nolan and Patrick Flowers. The two earned a $25 gift certificate compliments of Hank’s Bowl of Trenton, IL, in addition to a Pedal the Cause water bottle.

Thirteenth – Jim and Kreg, which consisted of Kreg Carran and Jim Thompson. This team won a $25 gift certificate compliments of IGA of Trenton, IL, in addition to a Pedal the Cause water bottle.

Fourteenth – Old Men, consisting of the dynamic duo of Paul Wilhelm and Jim Pehle. The “old men” shared the winnings of a donation from St. Louis City Soccer Team.

Fifteenth – Flying Bags, consisting of Arlene Baer and Tom Wilhelm. The two won a Adam Wainwright bobble (London series), compliments of St. Louis Cardinals, and a Pedal the Cause water bottle.

Sixteenth – Dirt Bags, consisting of Corey Hester and Cobb Boyd. The two each received a water bottle compliments of Pedal the Cause.

Other teams which competed included:

Patriots – Robert and Jane Wilhelm
Kela Cornhole – Lindsey Hughes and Jordan Donahue
#4 Bailey – Mary Beth Anheuser and Jill Ott
#4 Bailey (#2) – Kurt Anheuser and David Ott
Xtreme Fore – Kermit Edison and Angie Vanhorn
That’s a Winner – Carla Huelsman and Keri Mungan
Cob Blockers – Charity Winkler and Daulton Colligan
Bag Hagglers -- Tim and Megan Wilhelm
Miraculous – Margie Arnold and her grandchild, Anika (but the two dropped out due to stage fright).

Still, Margie and Anika Arnold and her granddaughter won the door prize: a Battle Bags game (compliments of Walmart of Highland, IL), plus one meal of choice, compliments of the Trenton House in Trenton, IL.

Taking home $120 for winning the 50-50 drawing was Terry Kahrhoff.

Also, a tip of the hat to all who contributed to the cause but may not have participated – or donated far more than the registration fee. I cannot thank all who did this, but it is very much appreciated.

Thank you once again for a successful fundraiser for cancer research. We hope to see all in 2024 as the committee of Trentonfest asked us back again.

Last, but certainly not least, I cannot help but thank Brian of Jersey County Cornhole for providing the equipment and professional help.

                                             ---

To register, please select one of the "Giving Levels" indicated on this site.

Giving Level 1: Entrance Fee Per Person. Cost: $20

Giving Level 2: Giving $5 More Than The $20 Entrance Fee. Cost: $25

Giving Level 3: Paid Entrance for Two. Cost: $40.

Giving Level 5: Going Out Of Your Way To Help Fund Cancer Research. Cost: $50.

Giving Level 6: You Are Giving To A Good Cause. Cost: $100.

The goal in this FUNdraiser is to raise $2,500 for cancer research through participating in Pedal the Cause. Because of your kindness, I have raised over $11,000 lifetime towards much-needed cancer research, as, you will agree, we MUST find a cure for this god-awful disease in our lifetime.

Reminder: This money is NOT for me. Nope. It is ALL for cancer research, so that we can stop cancer in its tracks, hopefully during our lifetime....So there are no more tragic surprises like the death of

* HELEN ANDERSEN,  the sister of the Wilhelm family of Lebanon, IL, who passed away on June 19, 2020 -- only 63 years old -- after a battle with lung cancer. The very active woman, wife, and mother of two daughters never smoked in her life but still managed to die of lung cancer. Go figure....Or, the sad passing of:

* ASHLEY FURLONG, who did not make it to her senior year in high school, all because cancer took its deadly toll on such a young life. She was a very close friend of my two daughters, so her loss hits home.

* MIKEL BUSS, who succumbed to cancer this year on Feb. 16 at his home in Highland, surrounded by his family. He was 67. He was born March 3, 1955 in Breese, a son of the late Leo and Mary Ellen, nee Alberternst, Buss.

I will be riding 30 miles for all three cancer victims at Pedal the Cause in St. Louis on Sunday, September 25. While I may struggle to ride 30 miles, I will do it in honor of these three who died from cancer.

Thank you all.
