As a Nursing student, I've been granted the exciting opportunity to assist and learn about nursing/midwifery practices in an Iloilo City hospital located within the Philippines through the organization, Work The World.
Through the helpful organization, Work the World, I will be providing assistance for four weeks in a significantly understaffed hospital this December/January. Nursing and midwifery practices in the Philippines are culturally very different than in the United States and a substantial lack of basic resources add challenges for the practitioners. For example, the ratio of nurses to patients in Iloilo City is roughly 1:50 whereas the ratio in the United States is about 1:6! To make the biggest impact possible, I will be using some of the donated money for supplies needed in the hospital (such as hand sanitizer). The rest of the donations will go toward the program and flights, allowing me to assist the faculty and expand my knowledge in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit as well as the fast paced Labor and Delivery Unit within the hospital.
