Pascual Kunchikuy (1972-2020) was a deeply dedicated community leader for his people, the indigenous Shiwiar of Ecuador's Amazon. He was taken from us by Covid in 2020 leaving a wife and six children.

- Please share with friends and colleagues. We'd love to hear your memories and thoughts about our connections with the rainforest
Pascual Kunchikuy was a committed campaigner and community leader who worked tirelessly to promote the interests and assist the development of the people in Shiwiar communities in Puyo, Amazonian Ecuador.
I first met him after I studied Biology in London and began to join projects in Ecuador. He was reaching out to connect with supportive westerners as the Shiwiar communities are under pressure from commercial interests seeking oil, gold, timber and colonisation in general.
I gathered a small group of people in the UK and Ecuador and we spent some months recording conversations with Shiwiar people , looking at cultural practices and the myriad of plants and animals that inhabit the forest.
Pascual has been lost from us due to the pandemic, at a relatively young age and this is significant lost, greatest of all to his wife and their 6 children, who are left without a father and provider.
Pascual was the founder of ONSHIPAE, FUNSIFF and Radio Tarimiat - Community Radio for indigenous communities. He also created BUGYU Tours for sharing the rainforest experience with visitors, and he created a Rainforest Guide corporation called CORGUITURAE - Corporación de Guías de Turismo de la Amazonia Ecuatoriana. This was a professional development organisation for rainforest guides in Amazonian Ecuador
He had signed an agreement with the central government for a project to guarantee the protection and continued existence of the the Shiwiar lands and forests.
I invite everyone who has benefited directly from Pascual's work and hospitality, visited Ecuador, or enjoyed rainforest products such as coffee, chocolate, quinine, chewing gum, rubber, and indeed fossil fuels, to make some contribution.
Thank you so much. And thank you Pascual and family for all that you did and are continuing to do to protect the global natural resource, deep cultural wisdom and unique people of Shiwiar territory.
