The Tiny Fields Project teaches families to grow food using boulevards and alleys in North Minneapolis. This fund will be used to purchase seed and seedlings to supply kits. Funds will be matched up to $1000.
The Tiny Fields Project uses boulevard and alley space to teach families to grow food, foster a better understanding of agriculture, get fresh vegetables on plates and connect neighbor to neighbor through growing. Every Tiny Fields participant receives a kit with seed and seedlings to plant a 5x11 foot space. Volunteers help till the planting space and participants follow along on social media for tips, prompts and further education. They can ask questions and share experiences as they go. Planting Tiny Fields on boulevards and alleys gets participants out in public spaces where they can meet their neighbors and form a stronger sense of community.
As the community faces an ongoing pandemic, there has been greater interest in growing among neighbors. Families and individuals are searching for ways to feel self reliant and communities are looking for ways to address growing food insecurity. The Tiny Fields Project is uniquely situated to help increase access to affordable, healthy food and increase a feeling of resiliency in its participants.
The pandemic has presented unique challenges to The Tiny Fields Project as well. Currently, seed companies are facing a seed shortage as demand has increased and labor availability has decreased. Some bulk seed companies are already putting delays and freezes on bulk seed purchase. To have the bulk supply The Tiny Fields Project will need to fill all the kits expected, we will need to purchase seed as soon as possible and cannot wait until most grant cycles begin in March and April.
Because of this unique challenge, we are asking for donations in this short flash donation campaign to secure seed and seedlings for the 2021 growing season. We have secured a generous matching donation of up to $1000 is you donate right away.
