The Outdoor Freedom Campaign

The Outdoor Freedom Campaign

From Eric Mansfield

I've raised most of the funds for my project but suffered a recent setback due to installing the wrong track drive sprockets, so I'm trying to raise $300 for sprockets and to have a custom shaft machined for proper fit.

Why I started this fundraising campaign

Since I lost my mobility and the ability to walk nearly 3 years ago, I have realized that even in a power chair there is still many places I can't go. Wheelchairs with tracks have been around for awhile now but are too expensive for the average disabled person, up to $20,000 for a "tank chair".

Update #20

Ok here's the latest on my tank chair project! The frame has been completed for a month now just waiting until I can order a few key parts that are neccessary to move forward. Right now funds are kind of drying up and I Currently have $1,560 to raise in order to finish this project. I'm currently drilling holes for my motor mounts which will be bolted on this weekend. I'm dealing with a substandard drill at the moment so that's slowing progress progress a little bit. Several people are very excited to see the finished product, which is sure to turn heads, though once I mount the tracks I'm not sure if it will fit in my van. It turns out it's 1/2" wider than expected with the tracks mounted. It's this kind of oversight that annoys my wife and I shall never hear the end of it:) My 42nd birthday is nearly a month away, and because of my recent health scare I am very greatful to have made it to another birthday. Everybody please donate as much as you so generously can so that I can enjoy each and every day to the fullest!

Update #17

Today the steel for my tracked wheelchair has gone to be welded and soon I'll be looking at the completed frame. Hopefully soon after it will be going to get powder coated but I'm still far from securing the funds to buy rubber tracks at a minimum of $200 each track these aren't cheap. Please donate if you can! And a big thanks goes out to my awesome mother-in-law, Rose Mansfield for finding someone willing to complete the welding! I plan on having the folk's at Powdercoating, Inc apply the finish and will display their logo and will happily show off this very cool piece of equipment at every car and motorcycle show in Snohomish. If you haven't already please donate! Thank you family and friends!

Update #14

Today they finished cutting the frame pieces for my badass wheelchair on steroids! I just need to go pick them up now as soon as I can, now I just need a welder up to the task of putting this beast together. It's going to take $2000 more to see this through to the end but it's off to a good start finally!

Update #13

Metal cutting started today and some of the parts will be machined later this week. Next I need a welder that doesn't want to charge me $700 to put this thing together. If anybody knows a welder who will work for cheap or donate his time and skills let me know. I'm running out of funds quickly so everyone please don't hesitate to donate, I should have a pretty good estimate of the cost to finish this by the end of the day today. Thank you all who have supported me!

Update #3

I'm making an extra effort to promote my campaign and need many more supporters to meet my goal! A few weeks ago I experienced a bout of heart failure and my heart was only pumping at 15% of it's blood capacity each beat. This was a life changing experience for me but I'm starting to bounce back! My goal right now is to live healthier, outfit my van with hand controls so I can get my license back, make it o to all my followup appointments and be the independent person I've always been.
