Help our kids to positively CHANGE the course of their futures! Support to OTTP provides our economically disadvantaged youth increased opportunities to succeed despite the negative circumstances that surround them.
I look at my daughters who receive SO MUCH love and support at home. I am so proud of them. They are flourishing. It makes my heart happy.
And when I think about the kids working with our therapists at Occupational Therapy Training Program (OTTP). I am saddened and angered to hear that some of these kids are born into families where they lack nurturing and guidance/support. They are NOT flourishing. They are born into a home with addiction and/or abuse, or worse.
There are also the children who receive great love from their parent(s) but still lack support because the parent(s) are working 3 jobs and are barely present.
Imagine this child and throw in PTSD and depression caused by severe trauma. Add hunger and food insecurity. Throw in exhaustion from a nervous system constantly on high alert. Now imagine this child who must get themselves to school, pay attention, finish homework, and learn so they can graduate.
How realistic is this expectation?
It's realistic with support. OTTP serves the most vulnerable youth impacted by trauma, ages 5-24. According to the National Alliance of Mental Illness, "Early engagement and support are CRUCIAL to improving outcomes and increasing the promise of recovery".
OTTP has a long wait list of children who are desperate for help. This is life-saving work and surely lays the foundation to personal, educational, and vocational success.
