the story.

within the movement for gender, we find divisions between ourselves over ethnic background, class, gender identity, physical appearance, etc. 

malee, the main character of the film, feels torn between her ethnic communities, and wonders if she really has a place in either of them. With guidance and encouragement from her mother and her ancestors, Malee is able to endure the scrutiny confidence in herself. 

message from the director.

making this film because of my mother, my aunt, and my grandmothers who had to adapt, shapeshift, and censor their identities in order to find respect and acceptance, even though it was their birthright. creating this film is about doing my part as a man to uplift and support women of color who have to overcome centuries of oppression and misogyny.

meet the team.

Aaron Ashby, director

Aaron is a recent graduate of USC School of Cinematic Arts where he earned a BFA film production. after producing a series of multimedia art shows in south LA, Aaron turned to VR as a way to combine his experiences in filmmaking, art installation, and community building. Aaron has created commercial and narrative content in North Carolina, Los Angeles, Bangkok, Hong Kong, and Taipei. Most recently Aaron produced and directed a series of VR short films for Sony Pictures and Jaunt Studios, and has exhibited work for USC’s Visions and Voices and ArtShare LA’s Ruff, Rugged, and Raw.

Aaron’s mission is to use cinema and immersive entertainment to stimulate cross-cultural and promote global kinship.

Mykaila Williams, producer

by trade; activist, sister, and friend by choice, Mykaila Williams grew up in Miami, FL before moving to California to attend Palos Verdes Peninsula High School. Recently having graduated from USC, Mykaila studied Film and Television Production. Additionally, Mykaila was the Director of Diversity Affairs for the Undergraduate Student Government and is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. Through OCEAN, Mykaila hopes to bring her community the inclusive content that it wants as well as an important story about women and collective unity that it needs. In her free time, she enjoys watching television, retweeting Black Twitter, listening to Hamilton, and giving back to her community.  

Claire Hernandez, co-producer

Claire is a currently studying Film and Television Production at USC School of Cinematic Arts. She is also a voice-over actress and can be heard on Barbie’s Dreamtopia. She has loved traditional filmmaking since she was twelve years old and now seeks to broaden her understanding and involvement into the virtual reality world. Claire’s passion project is to issues regarding women of color and our empowerment.
