Chi Omega and Beta Theta Pi Chapters at Washington U. have chosen North Side Community School as the beneficiary of their ThurtenE Carnival philanthropy efforts. Join them in raising money for a leveled reading program!
Thank you to everyone who has supported ChiO and Beta in their fundraising efforts for North Side Community School! Our students will be helped greatly through the leveled reading program.
North Side Community School is a Pre-K through 5th grade public charter school serving low-income, predominantly African-American neighborhoods in north St. Louis City. The school opened in 2009 with just 52 students and has grown to nearly 400 students this school year. North Side focuses on core subjects - math, language arts, and science. Also taught is social studies, art, music and physical education.
Many of the students enter North Side one year to 18 months behind their peers, but the staff and teachers at North Side are able to catch them up. For a few years now North Side has made a concerted effort to do whatever it takes to help bring any student up to grade-level.
Our priority has always focused on literacy first. We work with students who are anywhere from half a year to three years below their grade-level reading level. This new program is designed as an intervention system. Our teachers utilize a very effective core instructional guided reading system, but it is not rigorous enough to support students who need a focused, well-researched english language arts intervention.
That is why this leveled reading program will be the best resource school-wide to meet the needs of many of our students.
