NOlympics Los Angeles

From NOlympics LA

NOlympics LA is fundraising for organizational tools such as an independent market survey, because not a single independent media poll has been conducted to date for either the LA 2024 or 2028 bid.

NOlympics LA supporters and family,

It's been a while. But we come today bearing some exciting news about the work your donation has funded!

10 Months ago you we started a research project, because there was such a lack of polling and scrutiny from the media, local electeds and other institutions in LA.

And today we have now those results. And they're VERY compelling.

When we asked people whether they supported, opposed, or were neutral on the LA Olympics, here's what they said:

[When we asked people whether they supported, opposed, or were neutral on the LA Olympics, here's what they said:

47% of people polled oppose the LA Olympics.
26% support.
27% are neutral.

We also asked them a lot of other questions about what they knew about the bid, process, and other risks.

Here's a couple other key takeaways we had:

1) Support for bringing the Olympics to LA in 2028 is not nearly as strong or widespread as boosters have claimed; the appearance of passive support is connected to a lack of awareness

2) There is substantial reason to believe that with more information, a significant number of Angelenos will actively oppose bringing the Games to LA

Update #13

NOlympics LA Supporters!

Hello! It's been a while. This is a quick note to let you know that NOLympics LA has been busy working with our coalition partners in LA and around the world. One project we've been working on for months that we're excited to announce is our screening, DISASTERPIECE THEATER: HOMES NOT GAMES.

NOlympics LA and LA CAN are presenting a screening on the displacement and militarization leading up to the 2016 Olympics in Rio in Skid Row, next Saturday March 24th. NOlympics LA and LA CAN fear that LA will be victim to the same forces with the specter of another LA Olympics looming a decade away.

The screening will be at 7pm, preceded by a bike ride led by LA CAN.

Come to either - or both. They're free and open to the public.

Update #12

Hi Everyone!

We did it: we reached our goal (and exceeded it by a little bit). THANK YOU SO MUCH. We're going to roll into 2018 with our market research and a program of events and actions.

But it's still an uphill battle.

Here are some other things you can do to help us this year:
sign our petition: https://www.change.org/p/mayor-eric-garcetti-allow-angelenos-to-vote-on-the-olympics
join our newsletter to stay up to date on major actions and events: https://www.nolympicsla.com/joinus/
Or email us if you want to help strategically: no@nolympicsla.com

In the meantime, your items will be shipped by the end of January. If you DO NOT want any of the items entitled to you based on the amount of donation, LET US KNOW. Also, if you'd like to pick up your rewards at a DSA meeting instead of shipping, LET US KNOW. Any other questions or issues with your order, email us no@nolympicsla.com.

Again, we thank you for your contribution. We literally cannot do it without your help.

We have plenty more in store for 2018 as we oppose police militarization, gentrification, criminalization of the poor and unhoused, and mega events for the wealthy. Our commitment to fighting these forces is only growing stronger by the day.

We look forward to the struggle in the new year. Thank you so much.

Solidarity,
NOlympics LA

We just passed the halfway mark for our fundraising goal. That's a big deal.

Thank you soooo much for your contributions to date.

This week we're going to start rolling out the designs for all of the excellent rewards we've been working on, starting with our rad new NO! tote bag --- or NOTE bag.

We'll have lots of other news coming down the pike. Please help spread the word.

Update #5

Hi everyone! NOlympics LA is raising money to take our campaign to the next level. Help us change the conversation on the 2028 bid and demand #HomesNotGames, because the Olympics destroy communities and kill cities.

The Olympics have accelerated gentrification and displacement in every modern Games, and Los Angeles is already in the midst of a housing crisis. History has shown that the Olympics will increase an already-growing homeless population (now nearing 60,000), but City Council and the Mayor have done nothing to quell this fear.

Instead, the Games will be used as a pretext for developers to wreak even more havoc on a city suffering from rampant gentrification, rent hikes, and a housing shortage. LA is also home to the most murderous police force in the country AND the largest undocumented population, though we STILL don't have sanctuary protections. We believe these are much higher priorities than the Olympics, but our Mayor and City Council don't agree. So we're fighting for these issues to be addressed and prioritized over the Olympics, and this is a fight we believe we can win.

When we launched our coalition in May, we were a "late comer" to oppose the 2024 bid. Now we have more time (11 years) and more collective knowledge than any other opposition movement in Olympic history. This is a fight we can win.

We'll be giving away tons of limited edition NOlympics LA merchandise (union and USA made apparel and other goods) for donors and hosting other fundraising events in the future, but join us today to ensure that we can fight the Olympic bid and show what the people of Los Angeles really want!
