Staying on the Road to Recovery
Drug and Alcohol Addiction is a cruel and harsh reality for many people these days. Our country is in the perils of a drug epidemic, with Opiod related deaths reaching an astronomical level. Recent studies show that 115 people in the United States die a day from some type of Opiod related overdose. The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control reported 118 Drug Overdose Deaths in 2017, up from 87 in 2016. That number is expected to continue to rise as the battle with prescription drugs rages on. For many suffering from addiction, be it alcohol or drugs, the journey to recovery is long and hard. The road to recovery for many often includes attending support meetings, and mental health appointments. For those that are struggling to stay clean and sober, having a car, or even a license to drive a car, is not a reality. Getting to support meetings and medical appointments often falls on the person trying to recover to find a ride. Those in recovery will often admit, that attending a support meeting could be critical in keeping a person clean and sober for one more day. There are approximately 18 Narcotics Anonymous meetings, and 75 Alcohol Anonymous meetings per week across the Tri-County area. Currently, there is not a service providing transportation to those needing to attend recovery meetings.
