MUSIC IS MIGHTY MEDICINE: Memorial and Medical Fundraiser

From Rebecca Windham

Today is my mother's birthday. This is a fight to end cancer in memory of her and musician Don Discenza, in honor of my own journey, and to help with medical bills and a new recording project. I thank you with music.

More Info

Help to fight and eradicate cancer, honor the memory of two amazing people, help a musician continue on her survivorship path, and receive the beautiful gift of music in appreciation.

The big c….  This word elicits a myriad of emotional responses, too numerous and intense to even begin to describe.  Most of you reading this probably know someone who has been affected by it, or perhaps you yourself, like me, are a cancer survivor.

I am venturing upon this fundraiser as a healing gesture of honoring the past, celebrating and appreciating the present, and taking action to move into the future toward my goals.  I still have so much music to share as past gifts and to make way for the new ones.  In doing so I honor the memory of two very special people directly affected by cancer who have been significant to me and to these CD projects.

Westy Tate Windham gave me the treasure of passion for music.  She was also my mother and the most courageous person I have ever known in the face of a recurring malignant brain tumor.  Today is her birthday, and the date of this campaign launch.  As you listen to "The Flowerbed", a song I wrote in coping with her death, perhaps you will get a little insight into who she was.

Don Discenza was a beloved Atlanta musician, founding partner of the vocal quartet South City Voices and co-producer of "Got Swing!".  HIs fight with a rare type of leukemia ended with a moving and triumphant memorial tribute to him in Atlanta, GA. His wonderful arrangement and nod to Anders Edenroth (The Real Group) of "It Don' t Mean A Thing..." is one of my all time favorites, and, as a founding member of SCV and one fourth of the voices, I felt privileged to sing on it (I even hit the uber high notes he wrote- most of the time! :-))  I also include the title cut from Rebecca Windham's debut CD "To A Warmer Heart" for your listening.

I feel very fortunate to have had these two brave and inspiring people in my life, and that my breast cancer was caught early.  Now I celebrate the completion of 3 years of survivorship.  But there is still so much work to be done on all fronts...

After all fees, including website, payment processing, and shipping, 30% of the funds raised will be evenly distributed to areas of cancer treatment and research.  The specific foundations and organizations will be disclosed here as soon as I have the final approval/permissions, which should be in a few days.  The remainder will go toward my remaining medical bills, my new recording project, and be distributed among the producers of “Got Swing!”.

In appreciation of your support, you will receive these special music CD's for as long as supplies last.  I will keep you posted as this campaign story unfolds- photos and more information coming.   We are at the tail end of Breast Cancer Awareness month, and the campaign could really use your support.  I would be ever so grateful if you would share my story.

Update #12 Music Is Mighty Medicine Campaign on FUNDLY.COM. Thank you to Kathi Shuck for your recent donation! Need to keep going with this campaign in the wake of the Harvey disaster. I'm ok and very fortunate, but displaced and my home possibly without water. MD Anderson Cancer Center, a beneficiary of this campaign, has been affected. After you help the victims of Harvey, I hope you would consider helping me keep this campaign going. I share with you a snippet of my recording project- a tribute to Texas, and thank you for sharing about this campaign. This is my therapy. With love to you all, and especially to the Beaumont and Houston area residents, Rebecca. Here's the link:

With a little push and lots of SHARES, let's aim for 30% of goal by the end of this month!

So, even if you do not donate, please SHARE and spread the word. Let's finish August and close out the summer with making a great dent in our goal of 100% in 100 days! Thanks for reading , watching, and sharing.

Update #7

More Good News update! First of all, thanks to more donations, here we are at the start of week 3, and only $300 away from the 4 digit mark! And that much closer to 25% of goal. Let’s keep it going- I’ll be we can shoot for the 25% mark by the end of week three! Thank you so much to everyone who has already donated, and if you have not donated please consider it, or at least share. I realize the same folks are receiving this information, and I am going to continue to work hard to expand my network and audience beyond that. You can help with that too by simply sharing! Secondly, I have finally received the permissions/approval paperwork from one of the beneficiary organizations, and will be announcing their identity hopefully by the end of this week. Happy Monday, everyone, and happy great start to the week!
