This November I'll be running in Disney's Wine and Dine Half Marathon to raise money for Yellow Brick Road, help me support a great cause by donating or sharing with friends!
In January of this year, my wonderful family friends Trey and Nicole Flynn lost their son, Holden, to a Congenital Heart Defect. Before he passed away they had started working on creating a fund to help support families going through the same financial and emotional challenges that come with raising a child with CHD, and have chosen to continue with their plans to honor the spirit of Holden, the TinMan.
Holden had his first surgery in January of 2012, and though only here for a short time, Holden’s presence left a lasting impact on anyone who was lucky enough to know him. Watching Trey and Nicole love, honor and cherish Holden through all of his good days, as well as his challenges and surgeries, taught me that with love, support, bubbles, and one hell of a positive attitude you can get through anything.
In the wake of Holden’s passing it has felt impossible to find the words to show my appreciation and love for the Flynn’s, so it seemed only fitting to set out to DO something to honor the impact they have had on my life. For years I have been saying I wanted to complete a Half Marathon and the approach of the Wine and Dine Half Marathon presented the perfect opportunity to do so. Too often we put off achieving our dreams and goals because the promise of tomorrow is so comforting and choosing to do something now instead of “someday” seemed to be a fitting way to do my part in honoring Holden, whose tomorrow was taken much too soon.
As I prepare to run a 13.1 mile "yellow brick road" (in glittery red nikes, mind you) help me to reach my goals by donating to a great cause and honoring the spirit of not only Holden but Trey and Nicole as well, they raised a hero because they are hero's themselves.
