From Jennifer

Mia, a 1 year-old mixed-breed dog, needs surgery to repair her hind leg.

More Info

We welcomed Mia into our home on March 13th. She had been mistreated by her former owners. She was underweight with an injured hind leg. The next day we took her to Heartland Animal Hospital. The veterinarian gave her a wellness exam and took an x-ray of her injured hind leg.

The x-ray revealed that Mia's leg had been broken above the knee and had started healing wrong.  The muscles in her injured leg had atrophied due to lack of use.  She cannot walk on the leg at all.

The veterinarian gave us three options:

  1. Take Mia to an orthopedic surgeon and see if surgery would be possible. Most expensive option.
  2. Do nothing and give her painkillers. Most cheap option.
  3. Amputation.

We decided to take Mia to Dr. Herod at El Paso Veterinary Clinic in Derby.  He said surgery was possible, but it would be complicated due to the fact that this is an old break. Fresh breaks are easy to repair.  He was unsure how much the surgery would cost.  Her surgery has been scheduled for Wednesday, March 27th.  We pray this surgery goes well with no complications.

If the donations exceed the amount of the surgery bill, we will donate the remainder to the Kansas Humane Society in Mia's name.

In the meantime, Mia is gaining weight and taking painkillers for her injured leg. She is a very active dog and loves playing with children and our other dogs.
