Mental Hope Foundation creation

From Rose LaRue-Slater

In order to begin a foundation - I need to raise the funds to incorporate. The Mental Hope Foundation will raise money to create Mental Health ERs. Quiet, safe, comforting spaces for those in crisis to await placement.

Update #2

We've reached our goal to be able to incorporate. Now I wait for documentation and finish getting Troy settled into an ongoing program. Thank you to everyone who has donated. I've heard from a few who are interested in helping and I'll be working on putting together a board soon! I have a few ideas about how to get started but once I form a team, they will all be part of the decision-making!

More Info

The picture is my 15-year-old son awaiting placement in a mental health facility for Suicide ideation.  We were one of several patients in the hallway - not the only person with SI, and not even the only 15-year old with SI.  We waited in the ER for 34 hours, 16 of which, we were in a hallway.  Loud noises, alarms, bright lights, people yelling, wailing, even witnessed an arrest.  This environment is not conducive to healing.

The social worker contacted 17 different facilities the first night and there was no capacity.  One of the hospitals told the SW that they had EIGHT adolescents waiting in their ER for placement.   I read a story of a girl in another state having to wait for WEEKS.

Once my son was placed and I returned to work, I told my story to others.  Within minutes 2 colleagues reached out with stories of their own 15-year-old children who had experienced the same thing within 2 weeks of our experience!

With so many adolescents struggling right now, we need facilities intended for the purpose.  Soft lights, soft music, activities that are safe and distracting (puzzles, clay, art, board games, punching bags, animal therapy).   I dream of raising enough money to start building these facilities at all hospitals.  If our kids have to wait to get help, maybe we can help them wait in a place that doesn't make the situation WORSE.   Secondary to this would be to support the growth of current in-patient capacity so people don't have to wait days or even weeks for placement.

In order to create my foundation - the Mental Hope Foundation - I need to incorporate, get non-profit status, set up a tax ID etc.  I went through the steps on Legal Zoom and the initial cost is just over $1000.  My goal here is to raise $2000 to cover those costs and any other surprises.  I swear on my son that this money will be used ONLY for this purpose.  If for some reason my idea fails - any money I raise will be donated to a similar cause.  However, I don't intend to fail.  This is a dire need.  I've opened a separate checking account to keep the money straight.  Please feel free to email me at mentalhopefoundation@gmail.com with questions or stories.

Please keep in mind I have a full-time job and my son is coming home tomorrow and will still have a long road ahead, forgive me if my responses take a day or so.

And Thank you in advance for any support!

Update #1

We've officially covered the Legal Zoom costs to get set up. I just have to be patient and wait for the documents. Thank you to everyone for the support!
