Mental Health Awareness Week (and beyond)

Mental Health Awareness Week (and beyond)

From Caroline Edwards

I don't think employees get enough mental health support from employers. From May 13th-19th 2019, its Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW), and I want to raise money to promote mental health support for workers.

Update #4

Hi Everyone. Its officially awareness week this week. Old and new staff have asked for spaces at work where they can call helplines or research mental health support online, so that is something I am trying to help retain. Everyone deserves to feel comfortable at work, let's make that happen. Proceeds go to Mind and other wonderful mental health charities.

More Info

I work in HR, and have watched employees struggle with speaking about what is really bothering them. Mental health, regardless of media campaigns and efforts from employers and charities, remains taboo. It is hard for employees to reveal vulnerability and this causes them to keep quiet when they are quietly screaming for help. The result of keeping quiet is long term mental ill-health which can then cause physical health issues. We often spend more time at work than we do at home. Life/work balance is tough. The workplace should not be a place to fear, and staff should feel supported, no matter if their problems are personal or work related. I want to break the walls down that surround mental health. I have watched too many employees suffer in silence and no matter how many times I told them that they won't be judged for voicing their issues, some still do not believe an employer can be trusted. I want to change that. I want to make all workplaces feel safe, and comfortable. My job in HR stretches beyond the 9-5. Mental health has played a big part in my life, and I will do whatever I can to help people feel better.

Update #2

Thank you to those donating and looking. Every little helps (& people are being super generous) and it will help raise funds to support employees who struggle every day, feeling alone and desperate.
To those struggling, have a lovely Easter, and I hope the break gives you some time to relax and regroup.

Update #1

People are looking! The majority of us spend as much if not more time at work than at home, and when things are unsettled or someone is struggling, I want to be able to give them the support they need. Help me break the stigma over talking about problems.
