As the bicentennial of Melville’s birth approaches we're working to draw a new generation of members into the Melville Society! To do that we hope to offer travel awards for our upcoming conference in New York!
As we begin our celebration of the bicentennial of Melville’s birth we're also thinking about drawing new members into the Melville Society!
That work is increasingly difficult in a moment when both full-time positions and streams of research and travel funding are diminishing at a rapid rate. So we hope you will be part of this new initiative to create travel awards for the upcoming Melville Society Conference in New York.
Melville Society Travel Awards will enable us to defray the cost of attendance for scholars of limited means (i.e. contingent faculty, graduate students without travel funding, scholars who aren’t otherwise able to afford international travel, or independent scholars). And our hope is that these awards will expand and diversify the participants in our biannual conference. We think that recruiting a new generation of members is essential to the future of the Melville Society, and these grants can play a significant role in that crucial work.
We need to raise at least $1200 to be able to offer three or four awards. And ultimately we hope to raise $3000 to secure the future of this initiative. We are also happy to say that these gifts are tax deductible!
Thanks so much for considering being part of this new project. We hope you'll be willing to join us in this initiative—and to help us support the future of the Melville Society.
