The Fund has been established to rehabilitate and preserve the historic African American Lilly’s Chapel Cemetery and Island Grove Cemetery in rural NC.
Over the past two decades these historic sites have deteriorated, been damaged and vandalized, and are in desperate need of not only restoration but a plan to maintain them in the future. Cemeteries and graves are important historical features of our African-American cultural landscape and reflect a human need for a hallowed site of remembrance. Cemeteries are communal expressions of observance and are the outgrowths of the communities that create them. Lilly’s Chapel & Island Grove Cemeteries are a focal point for the African-American family, community, our religion, and ethnic celebrations that honor the dead and foster a sense of group identity among the living. We are soliciting your support of this important plan to restore and preserve these Historic Treasures. A Cemetery Preservation Plan has been developed and we need your financial support.
