#MayasLoveBank Hair Cut Challenge

#MayasLoveBank Hair Cut Challenge

From Amanda Burgess-Proctor

Our 11-year old daughter Maya uses a robot to attend school virtually while undergoing treatment for lymphoma at Beaumont Children's Hospital in Royal Oak, MI. We are raising money to buy more robots for BCH patients.

Update #3

Flashes of Hope (flashesofhope.org) is a national non-profit that raises money for pediatric cancer research and provides professional photographs of children with cancer. Recently our family did a photo shoot with them. In a happy coincidence, the photographers were at Beaumont the same day the #mayaslovebank robots arrived, so Maya got a photo with them before they were delivered to the pediatric patients who will be using them to attend school! Thank you to everyone who made the purchase of these robots possible. We are so grateful for the opportunity -- one of many unexpected blessings on this journey.

#MayasLoveBank Hair Cut Challenge

In November 2018, 11-year old Maya Proctor of Royal Oak, MI was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.

Chemotherapy caused Maya to lose 25 inches of hair. Now she is challenging others to cut their hair to raise money for a good cause!

Thanks to funding from Children’s Miracle Network, Maya has been using a robot to virtually attend school during her treatment at Beaumont Children’s Hospital in Royal Oak. She is the only pediatric patient to have this opportunity as there is only one robot available at Beaumont. Maya and her family want to make this technology more widely available so that additional children can stay connected to school during their hospital stays.

On Sunday, December 30 from 12-4pm, stylists at 6 Salon in Birmingham will offer complimentary cuts to anyone pledging to donate $10 per inch (or $50 per shaved head) for the purchase of additional robots for Beaumont Children’s Hospital.

The #MayasLoveBank Hair Cut Challenge will remain open through Saturday, February 9 at 6 Salon locations in Royal Oak and Birmingham.

All proceeds will go toward the purchase of additional robots, manufactured by Double Robotics, and related equipment. The total purchase and operational cost per robot is approximately $5000.

Alternatively, donations may be made directly to Children's Miracle Network by clicking here.

To gather strength for the challenges ahead, Maya’s family came up with the idea of creating a “Love Bank” where friends and relatives could make deposits of prayers, positive energy, and healing wishes. Maya’s account quickly was filled to capacity thanks to her family’s incredible support network, so now they want to share that wealth with others.  #MayasLoveBank

Update #3

This Saturday, February 9th, we celebrated Maya's 12th birthday and the conclusion of the #MayasLoveBank Hair Cut Challenge. We are thrilled to report that with the help of many generous relatives, friends, and strangers, we far surpassed our initial fundraising goal!

In addition to the $10,000 we gave Beaumont Children's Hospital in January for the purchase of two additional robots, we have raised well over $5000 in additional donations. We will be giving that money to the Skandalaris Family Center for Children with Cancer and Blood Disorders, the pediatric hematology-oncology clinic at Beaumont.

Thank you to Chris Trebilcock for the inspiration to do this fundraiser; to George Nikollaj, Derrick Rassam, and the entire 6 Salon team for hosting; to Adam Gilles and the Knights of Columbus #3292 for their generosity; to everyone who donated money, time, and inches of hair to support our efforts; and to our family and friends who have filled our family with unending love and light. We are honored by the opportunity to share your kindness with others.

With gratitude,
The Proctor Family

Update #1

Earlier today, Bryan, Maya, and I had the honor of presenting Beaumont Child Life Program representatives with a check for $10,000 to purchase not one but TWO additional robots! This gift was made possible by the generosity of each person who has supported our #MayasLoveBank Hair Cut Challenge. We are so grateful for the opportunity and grateful to all of you.

We still have more than $2000 in remaining donations (including those given to us independently of this Fundly page), and the Hair Cut Challenge remains in effect through Saturday, February 9th! As we have already doubled our goal of purchasing one robot, all additional funds will go to support programming and resources at the Skandalaris Family Center for Children with Cancer and Blood Disorders (where Maya receives her outpatient treatment) and the Beaumont Child Life Program.

We are blessed by the kindness of every person who has helped make this fundraiser an enormous success. Thank you!
