Each day 830 women die around the world from complications of pregnancy and childbirth. The highest number of deaths occur in rural areas and in poorer communities. In the US, the most notable disparity in mortality rates is defined by race: Black women die at a rate that ranges from three to four times the rate of their white counterparts. The deaths occur due to severe bleeding after childbirth, infections, high blood pressure during pregnancy and complications during delivery.
99% of these deaths are preventable by providing critical and timely care.
