What We're Doing
Throughout the year, we have been working to develop a love of running amongst our middle school students. So far, we have participated in one Cross Country season, one 10k race, and three 5k races. This spring, we have 16 students of varying experience levels training to participate in the Memphis “M-Town Series,” which consists of four different races!
What We’ve Been Doing
As we mentioned, some of our students have been training all year by participating in each and every running opportunity we’ve provided. Other students are joining the team for the first time this spring!
We’ve already started training together as a team for our upcoming races! Since March, these students have learned about so much more than just running. They’ve been learning about goal-setting, teamwork, perseverance, and patience. These 16 students have also practiced responsibility and accountability, as each of them has met strict attendance and effort requirements. New friendships have been formed; students have stepped outside of their comfort zones; kids who couldn’t run for one minute straight just weeks ago are now pushing through 20 minutes straight of jogging and encouraging other students along the way!
Why Our Students Run
Our students have expressed a variety of reasons for why they run. Many of our students cite running as a way for them to relieve stress or to work out anxiety, whereas others use running as a way for them to get in shape and work on their fitness. Whatever the reason, we are working with them to set goals and push themselves!
What Your Donation Will Fund
The 16 students who have been selected to run the M-Town Series will receive a commemorative Memphis Rise Academy dry-fit shirt (cost- $15) to run their races in. It will also cover the $100 for the series entry. Additionally, $10 per student will go to funding two healthy pre-race meals, as two of our races are during week nights and we will be preparing at school beforehand. Lastly, the remaining funds will help fund transportation, water, and other costs associated with training. All of this will help motivate students towards finally meeting their goal and giving their best efforts on race day!
