On January 25th, 2016 Peter, myself and my dad intend to take Peter on a 3 week missions trip to South Sudan. Peter has not been back to South Sudan for 28 years, ever since his parents were brutally killed and he fled the country.

We have several ministry contacts in South Sudan including Bishop Abraham Nhial.

Abraham Nhial's website: http://lostboysnomore.org/ To watch Abraham's video click here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9JmJxDEnU4

We will be staying with the Bishop and we will encourage the Christians in Peter's hometown of Aweil and the neighboring villages. We will also learn how we can partner in mission with the South Sudanese.

Please consider supporting us on this adventure, especially in prayer. Fighting in South Sudan has recently prompted the US Embassy to be reduced to a skeleton staff. The fiercest fighting started December 19th of 2013 and was in the main city of Juba. 1.5 million people were forced from there homes while 400,000 people fled to nearby countries.

Peter’s story

When Peter was 4 years old, Islamic extremists came into his village and massacred the people. When the sound of drums announced the impending attack, Peter and many other children ran into the forest. Peter then began a death march as thousands of displaced young boys traveled to Ethiopia. Along the way, the boys died from starvation, thirst, wild animals and attacking militia. Peter was kidnapped along with other boys and they tried to force them to join the militia. The boys were given a choice to join or else the kidnappers would kill two men in front of them. The boys refused and the two men were murdered before them.

The militia chased the escaping horde of young boys to Ethiopia and herded them towards the crocodile infested waters of the Gilo River. About 20,000 boys fled to the river. Thousands died in a single day by crocodile, drowning or bullets. Peter, with the help of his cousin and the grace of God lived through this ordeal.

Over the next decade, Peter and the other Lost Boys experienced starvation and trials throughout many countries in Africa as they were homeless and unwanted. I’ve known Peter for many years and I still have only begun to scratch the surface of the Lost Boy’s years of running.

In 2000, America woke up to the plight of the Lost Boys who were living in a desolate camp in Kakuma, Kenya. The State Department decided to airlift the boys to America. Peter was among the first to leave in late 2000. Flights continued bringing Lost Boys to America until September 11, 2001 when all flights were cancelled. Only 3,800 Lost Boys made it to America.

Peter has been a member of our church body for a little more than 3 years. In that time, we’ve grown close through our weekly discipleship meetings. Through Peter’s passion for lost people everywhere, including South Sudan, God began to put the idea of taking a trip on my heart. After much prayer with Peter, we decided that we should go. When we brought our idea to the church, we were amazed to see that God had placed a burden on many members to give Peter the opportunity to return to South Sudan. My dad, Major Steve Ball, decided to join us. January was chosen because travel is possible because the rainy season will be over

It has been Peter's dream all along to return home and help the South Sudanese by spreading the message and love of Christ to the 10.8 million people who live there.

Update #14

Good news!

We have plans to travel to South Sudan. We have once again purchased our tickets to South Sudan. Lord willing, we will leave LAX on January 25th and spend a full 3 weeks on the ground in South Sudan. We will land in the capitol of Juba and try to make our way to the city of Aweil.

As always, we are trusting God to make this trip happen. We believe that God has called us to go and we are obediently waiting for when God would have us go. Peter is his usual patient and trusting self. He constantly reminds me that God is in control and that I don't need to worry about the details. This entire trip is still a challenge for me in this area as the countless details of a trip like this make it very easy for me to forget why we are going in the first place. God is sovereign and we will trust him.

Things are very bad in South Sudan right now with peace talks failing regularly. We are excited to head to the country to see the needs there and discover ways in which God would have us be involved in spreading the gospel AND humanitarian needs.

Because of the increase in cost of our tickets and the upcoming expense related to our visas, we will be attempting to raise more money in support of this trip. I'm humbled to see the support that has come in when we tried to go earlier this year. It is only because of your generosity that this trip is even possible. We will be selling a new shirt design. We hope that you will continue to pray for us!

Let me know if you have any questions!
In His Name and for His Glory,
Matthew, Peter and Major Steve

Update #13

To all who have prayed for us, loved us and supported this trip,

Our trip to South Sudan has been postponed. The visa requirements changed and visas are now required before entering the country (aka before departure). We had been told that visas were available on entering the country. However, there was much confusion at the airport as my dad was allowed to board in error and Peter and I were kept from boarding.

Of course, while we are disappointed, God isn't. Even as we prayed and planned and bought supplies and prayed some more and bought our tickets and arranged lodging and transportation in South Sudan and continued praying..., God knew we would still be home today. Nothing happens outside of his control and we are firmly in His will. Knowing that God had a different time in mind for our trip is very comforting. Also, knowing that our job is the same regardless of where we are: to bring glory to the name of God in everything (1 Corinthians 10:31). And so as I write this in my office in El Cajon, CA my prayer is that my life will bring glory to God today because of the things I do, think and say. God is good and he is worthy of my full devotion today.

About the situation with donations, flights, supplies etc. We will receive a refund for our flights minus a cancellation fee that I will replace myself. We have everything we need for a trip to South Sudan and we are actively planning our trip for a different day. Already we are tentatively looking at a trip in the summer perhaps. Pray that the way will be opened for us to go soon!

I wish you could all have talked with Peter when we found out at the airport that we couldn't board. While I frantically began calling, texting and emailing to find a solution, Peter kept reminding me that, "This trip is not about us, it is about God." He also kept quoting verses from Isaiah about God in control. He is totally ready for whatever God has in store and has his normal infectious God honoring attitude. It's been 27 years since he's been to his home country and yet he treasures God above everything. He was and is a fantastic reminder to me about what really matters in the face of disappointment.

As I've written many times in these updates, please pray for peace in South Sudan. On the day we were to depart, peace talks broke down yet again. The country is in constant turmoil and the peace of God is needed to bring reconciliation and forgiveness between the many tribes and people of the Sudanese region. God is at work there and we must pray that his kingdom come in South Sudan.

Thank you all for your prayers and support and know that I will continue to steward the resources and supplies you have generously provided. Lord willing, we are still going to travel to South Sudan and I will keep you posted as our plans progress!

In His name and for his glory,
Matthew Ball

Update #12

We leave tomorrow! We are fully funded, PRAISE GOD!!! Last minute details have been falling into place wonderfully. I"ve been promised there will be surprises on this trip, just because we're heading to South Sudan. But God has never been surprised, nothing will happen that he hasn't ordained in his great wisdom and power. When God's the one in control, trusting becomes easier. Pray for us and those we will meet. As always pray for peace in South Sudan!

Update #10

We are at 77%!!! God has been faithful to us over the last few months. We will be in South Sudan in less than 4 weeks. It's gonna be here before we know it. Thank you for your prayers. Keep spreading the Word.

As you may know, Peter is out ringing at a Salvation Army kettle every day. He is always telling people about the love of Jesus and even our upcoming trip. Several people have driven to my office to donate after having a talk with Peter. He is, of course, very excited to visit home!

Thank you to all who have supported us! We have less than $2000 to go!

Update #8

5 weeks from today, we will be in South Sudan! We still covet your prayers for safety and peace in South Sudan. It is a country in turmoil and the people there need peace. Join us as we prayer that God would do exactly what he wants to with us on this trip. I pray that God will show us what he wants to show us and do a work in our hearts that will leave us forever changed.

We need a little more than $2000 to completely fund this trip. The remaining items we need include Peter's remaining vaccinations and our flights to Aweil from Juba once we arrive.

Thank you again for everyone who has supported us! We love you and are very grateful for the way God has moved so many to help us!

We are over 30%

Thank you to everyone who has donated and supported us so far! God is continuing to move this trip forward. There have been cool stories of God moving people in specific ways to give. Many are stepping out in faith and I'm privileged to get to hear their stories. God is always good.

One of our favorite verses for this trip: Matthew 28:16-20

Praise report! 25%!

With only 6 unique donors we are already 25% funded!

There are some expenses that we don't know the cost of (namely immunizations, flights to Aweil and various equipment) but at this rate God is going to fully fund this trip quickly! I'm very encouraged and humbled by the generosity of friends and family near and far. Thank you to those who have supported us so far! God clearly has a plan for us and this adventure.

Our prayer continues to be peace in South Sudan so that we can carry out our mission. God is always good!

Introducing a new member for our trip: Augustino Nyigillo

We have some exciting news. There will be 4 of us going to South Sudan now. Another Sudanese man, Augustino, from our church will be joining us. His story is a little different from Peter's. He and his family were born and raised in Juba, the capital of South Sudan (before it was a country of course). He has been living with his wife and son in the US for about 10 years. Augustino is excited to return to his hometown. He has already provided valuable information for the planning of our trip. Augustino will be a huge help as guide in Juba and as we arrange transportation to Aweil. Continue to pray for us as we move forward with the many details involved with this adventure.

Update: Augustino is no longer able to come with us. The trip was too expensive, however, he hopes to come later, should we ever go again...
