About Me

I am a dental hygienist in Washington DC.  10 yrs ago I started with a dental/medical/building project in El Salvador and it was the best experience in my life to this day!  It opened my eyes to the world, people and life lessons that I wanted to share with the world.  I've been searching  for a new avenue to volunteer through and Habitat for Humanity was at the top of the list!  So here we go,  starting the 50yr decade with this amazing program in Zambia!  Help me help there possibilities become their reality!

More Info

In the late 1960s, Zambia was the third largest copper producer in the world. Its natural resources made it potentially one of the richest countries in Africa. In the early 1980s, the world price of copper plummeted, plunging Zambia into debt.Despite recent economic progress, Zambia remains one of the least developed nations in the world. Unemployment and poverty are widespread and two thirds of the population lives on less than US$1 a day.

Decent housing in urban areas remains unattainable and unaffordable for most people and slums abound.

Most struggle to afford the frequent necessary repairs to their mud, wattle and grass thatch roof homes. Cracked and broken walls invite rain and rodents into houses, which in turn pose serious health risks. Families are crowded into asingle room, which usually also serve as a kitchen. Children are exposed daily to life-threatening environments.

Habitat for Humanity Zambia opened its doors in 1984, when it started building houses for fishing families on Kabuyu Island. From these small beginnings, HFHZ built more than 1,700 houses, and has expanded into six of the country’s nine provinces.  HFHZ builds in both rural and urban areas. The houses are simple but high quality, with separate sleeping, cooking and living areas. The design is such that homeowners have the option of extending the house as they can afford it in the future.

Global Village is Habitat for Humanity’s international volunteer program. Teams travel to over 40 countries to work alongside communities, build housing solutions, and experience local culture. Our goal is to change the lives of the people we serve, as well as the lives of the volunteers.

About Habitat for Humanity International

Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in more than 1,300 communities throughout the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.
