First day of school tomorrow! And I'm so incredibly grateful to feel excited. Thank you all supporting me & in all the ways of your support!
Most of you know me quite personally and you know my story, but if you don't: My name is Lorena and I am undocummented. I'm finally in a place in my life; thanks to DACA; where I can go back to school to become a Registered Nurse (RN). I have experienced numerous limitations and delays in the expansion of my education over the years. These restrictions have, by no means, diminished my drive and desire to achieve success and better my life.
While it took me longer than desired, I earned an Associate's Degree graduating in 2007. At that time, I was unable to continue schooling because I didn't have a work-permit or a social security number. In 2012 I received Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and it allowed the opening of several doors for me. Since receiving it, I have earned a Certified Nursing Assistant Certificate (CNA) and a Medical Interpreter Certificate. I am currently employed part-time in a pediatrics clinic. I got accepted to the Truman College Nursing program. I start at the end of Aug. EEK! I just got assigned to St. Francis Hospital for my fall semester Clinicals.
I am ready to give this my all. I am still not eligible for financial aid or student loans (I hope this changes in the near future). Scholarships are limited for my specific situation and it appears that the ones that I am eligible for I am overqualified to take, since I already have a degree. But with your help you can aid my efforts and take a huge weight off my shoulders allowing me to keep my focus on being successful in my classes.
