More Info

*Update 7/27* I ordered the main library structure today! This particular style was on a free shipping promo, saving us about $100. We've raised $591 so far, and spent $330. Installation costs are TBD, and, as noted, remaining funds will go to a 2nd library and/or replenishing books.*

*Update 7/25* We met our goal in less than 2 days! Thank you to all contributors. If you'd still like to contribute $, it will go toward maintaining the library with current books and/or toward a future library on the other side of the hill. More details coming once the library is in (goal=end of August!).

Jones Hill is a small, vibrant section of Dorchester, which itself is the largest neighborhood of Boston.

Although we are close to the wonderful Uphams Corner Branch of the Boston Public Library, there are no Little Free Libraries less than a 50-minute walk from Jones Hill.

This Little Free Library will be installed outside the Windermere Community Garden, at the bottom of Windermere Rd--200 ft. from Stoughton St., downhill from St. Mary's Center for Women and Children and easily accessible from Uphams Corner as well.

Little Free Libraries are always open and function on an honor system; readers donate and borrow/take books as they like.

This Library will include books and magazines for kids, teens, and adults, and will be initially stocked by members of the neighborhood, many of whom have already volunteered book donations.

We are particularly seeking relatively small donations of $5 to $20...think of it as the cost of a book!

Funds will go toward buying and shipping the library and post.

  • Total projected cost of $542.46
  • The box itself is $300 + $90 shipping, and the post is $80+$80 shipping (these #s are approximate and I can provide specifics for anyone interested).
  • We are hoping to get community help with building a post instead, saving us $160 total.
  • Final costs will be shared transparently.
  • Any remaining funds will go toward a combination of a) purchasing high-interest books for the Library + b) a possible second library on the other side of the Hill in the future.
