We’re going to camp*!

*With your help!

We are a school of predominantly black and brown students, trying to get to a nature camp along the eastern coast this February. Going in years past, we’ve seen great strides as our kids, who don’t typically get this type of experience, learn more about themselves, each other, and the world around them.

As we’ve taken students in the past, we’ve noticed that especially with students that have trouble concentrating and managing their anxiety, outdoor learning helps. Students will be able to engage with one another and and learn about and explore nature as they have the freedom to get as physically active as they can. They get to spread out and work and collaborate in groups while learning. They will be able to work on their social skills and learn to resolve conflicts with compassion and confidence.

Studies show that engaging in nature for extended periods of time help students better engage with school but it doesn’t stop there. Spending time outside increases serotonin levels and endorphins, helping students better regulate mood, lower blood pressure, and better sleep, memory, digestion, and appetite. In one of the studies we’ve found, just twenty minutes outside can elevate attention performance (National Wildlife Foundation). Imagine what nearly a whole week outside could do!

The cost for each student is one-hundred and fifteen dollars to be paid in full by February 2, 2020. We're taking eighty-five students and six teachers and chaperones. We want all students to experience success this school year.

Due to being a Title I school, our funds are stretched tight just to cover the essentials. This is a great way to give our kids a unique and exciting experience before starting at new schools next year. Help us send them off with more confidence in themselves and expand their knowledge in what they can achieve!

Please share widely! Any amount helps and we appreciate your donation!
