I have worked in corporate America my entire adult life. I really enjoyed working in the white-collar environment even though I was brought up in a blue-collar household. I learned about blue-collar values of hard work, being a straight shooter, loyalty, and the value of keeping one's word. My white-collar experience was also amazing in the beginning. The edge of your seat deadlines, the colorful team collaborations, and the quotas that were sometimes so ridiculous you’d either shrunk from the stress or you strategized, executed, and regardless of the outcome you grew but like grandmother always told me, grow with a win.
Fast forward I am older, more mature, and I’ve had the unfortunate experience of losing close family members. My beautiful niece and nephew. They were young, amazing, loving, and caring. I also lost four precious sisters and my big brother in 2021 to cancer.
To distract myself from the hurt of their untimely demise, I put all my focus on work. I chased the shiny objects. Corporate recognition, promotion, sales excellence awards, and that corner office with a view. Even with all the accolades I felt that something was missing, and I didn’t know what it was until I found it. It was passion.
It seemed like my daughter grew up overnight and then graduated from Howard University with her bachelor’s degree during one of the most turbulent years in her life, the first year of the pandemic. Next my son went from an adorable wobbling infant who often debated whether he was going to suck on his binky or his blanket to this charismatic 8-year-old Fortnite game playing, wireless headset wearing kid with way cooler hair than me, granted that I don’t have any.
Aging happens to all of us. Including the woman that I looked up to the most. My mom took care of ten children pretty much on her own. She is my superwoman but when she could no longer fly into burning buildings, it was a reality check for me but no matter what her physical limits were, she would never give up. They say habits are contagious.
After her health began to decline and she became older, she needed help. My family and I came to the calling. Helping my mom ignited something in me. As I continued my journey of working my 9 to 5 and providing assistance for my mom, I began to acknowledge there are others out there that have older parent(s), grandparents, family members, or neighbors that want to stay in their own home and keep some independence but just need some help with daily activities like cooking, cleaning, trips to the grocery store, or doctor appointments, and even companionship. .
