About Me
Good Counsel is a nationally recognized nonprofit leader and innovator in creating supportive residential care and community-based services for homeless, expectant, and new mothers and their children in the context of the Catholic social tradition. Pregnant and expectant mothers, with or without other born children, including mothers with mental health or addiction challenges, from any location, are able to receive help in a Good Counsel home.
Good Counsel Homes was founded in New York in 1985 by Fr Benedict Groeschel and Christopher Bell to provide a safe haven to homeless pregnant women and their children.
In 2011, Good Counsel opened a home in Riverside, NJ to serve women in South Jersey. Within one month of their opening, they were operating at over 100 percent occupancy.
Around Christmas last year, I had an opportunity to visit the home. It is so much more than a shelter. I could see the genuine concern the staff has for the moms. It felt like a family home and a place where young moms and their children could thrive.
