What is happening with Jupiter Foods?

As our membership drive continues I would like to first express my deep gratitude and commitment to you, who have joined our club! The words of encouragement are as much appreciated as the financial.

To update our progress, we have registered the business with the CA Secretary of State to become a corporation. This entity change was necessary to sell shares of the company to investors and get the larger chunk of building expenses. We have been actively meeting with and presenting to a handful of folks we know. Maybe you or someone you know would like to hear our pitch?

Additionally, our website jupiterpetaluma.com has added some slight functionality. If you haven't visited, please check it our and give your feedback.

As always, networking is critical for us. Our work with the Sonoma County Food System Alliance, Daily Acts, and the Bionutrient Food Association continues to bring us in the orbit of our core consumer but reaching out to your contact list or "sharing" and "liking" our social media posts is helpful and appreciated.

Update #4

For a small boy growing up in Iowa, there is a lot of sky, a lot of space to dream about any place other than Iowa. Many of my dreaming hours were spent in Jupiter, the five and dime store in town. Maybe that’s where I started trying to see beyond Iowa. I was drawn outside of Iowa, outside America, outside Earth. When I discovered astronomy, Jupiter quickly became my favorite target in the sight of my telescope. Jupiter still fascinates me with its size, clouds, big red spot and its enormous moons.
Hand in hand with my interest in astronomy came my love of science fiction. I’ve always been a sci-fi fan. And I watched Lost in Space religiously. The Jupiter II was home to the Robinson family and their robot. Robots still fascinate me. When they remade the television series into a blockbuster movie, I made it one of the few movies I own.
Not long ago a friend who dabbles in astrology suggested a phenomenon called the "Grand Cardinal Cross" which would be creating an environment of great change. I, myself, was in the process of great change, hoping to make a career change. My friend explained that the planet Jupiter had completed the cross in mid April. About that time I received news that “Mama,” my step-mother, was diagnosed with cancer. By mid-July the cross had moved out of formation. Mama died on August 15 and her funeral was on my 50th birthday. Among Mama’s belongings we found her aluminum Christmas tree. When I got back to California and the time came to set up the tree, I took it out of its original box and found that it was from Jupiter, the beloved five and dime of my childhood.
I choose to honor "Mama's" legacy by naming my all-organic produce store "Jupiter Foods” in her memory. In my childish desire to get as far away from that farm as I could, I have not come full circle to longing for us to get back to the land, to eat our food from the very best soil our farms can produce.
At Jupiter Foods we will sell only organic produce, high quality, specialty grocery and pantry staples. We will work with local farmers to get nutrient-dense products grown in healthy soil.
We intend for Jupiter Foods to be the place to shop for everything from your everyday meals. We hope that we can provide a European market atmosphere whether you’re planning an extravagant dinner party or a last-minute picnic or lunch.
We’d like to be a place to sharing knowledge about produce selection and preparation techniques.
We will offer:
• organic bread and dairy
• locally made cheese as well as varieties and brands deemed exceptional
• grab-and-go salads with house-made dressings and wraps
• hard to find and organic chips, crackers, snacks and specialty soda pop!
We will offer a free filtered water dispenser.
We will also sell responsibly-sourced, non-food, household goods like totes, market baskets, tea towels and water bottles.

Update #1

Bringing "good groceries" to Petaluma has been our dream for many years, when we started this project we thought our $200k savings would fulfill that dream. The $200k got us a good start but now we need more. We have a space, some product, building plans and permits and a great business plan but need your help to finish the project and get the store built. When it came time to seek investors, we talked with a lot of Petaluma's best food advocates. Everyone we spoke to said a community based funder was our way to make it YOUR store. We listened so here we are with hat in hand. We can't finish this project without you. The money raised during this membership campaign goes directly to the construction of the store. Your membership can pay for itself by buying the food we are all talking about but can't get our hands on anywhere else.
