On June 25, 2019, Larry underwent surgery he had a kyphoplasty, instrumental fusion, and laminectomy, which is a procedure that inserts rods, pins and cement to fix the fractures. During this surgery, a mass was discovered and removed, but doctors later determined it was in fact cancer. The doctors believe the cancer started in Larry's urethra but now has branched off and spread into his bones. He has gone through 5 rounds of chemotherapy and 10 rounds of radiation, but the cancer is spreading rapidly and is now in Larry's hips. Also, he may have new fractures in his vertebrae, but more scans are needed to determine the diagnosis.
Anyone who knows Larry, knows he would give you the shirt off his back. Before May, he was the healthiest 78 year-old man I have ever met. He would put any of us youngsters to shame. He still played basketball, softball, did work around the house You name it, Larry was capable of doing it. He is retired from the teamsters Union with over 30 years of service. This unfortunate situation has taken a mental, physical, and financial toll on Larry and Sherry Hagerich. In just a few short months, their lives have totally been turned upside down.
