Supporting KSPCA During COVID-19

From Odin Berkenpas

I am a 9 year old American student at the International School of Kenya and I am raising money for the Kenya Society for the Protection of Animals (KSPCA) to help them care for, feed and protect animals during COVID-19.

Update #3

We broke $5,000. I am so happy and excited and can't really believe it. I moved my goal back to $10,000 because my Grandpa told me that I should shoot for the stars and he is right. $5,000 pays for all of the food and medicine for all of the animals for one month which is so great. Thank you all soooooooooooooo much. I think now I need to find some famous people or some animal rights people or some businesses. I made a video for my favorite football player Paolo Dybala and sent it last night but my Mom says he has 35 million followers so I don't know if he will see it. I am making a list of other people too. Does anyone have any ideas? Please let me know so I can get to $10,000 (and maybe even $15,000)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

More Info

Hi everyone,

KSPCA is the only animal shelter in Kenya.  They rescue sick, injured and abandoned animals. They also take in homeless animals to make sure they are not treated badly in the streets. Right now KSPCA is taking care of dogs, cats, donkeys, and one horse but they will help any animal that needs them.

One of the donkeys coming to say hello.  They were almost extinct in Kenya but they just passed a law making it illegal to slaughter them.

This cat had to have her eye removed but now she is all healed and is in the cattery with many friends.

My goal is to raise money to help KSPCA during COVID-19. It is hard to take care of animals during uncertain times and so KSPCA needs our help. I did a bake sale with my friend Omi and we raised $400 for KSPCA.  I am really proud of the money we raised but they need a lot more help. I know that lots of people need help during COVID-19 and that sometimes animals don't seem important but without them our earth would not be the same.

This is when Omi and I (and his sister Ella) dropped off the $400.

Some things I learned from Faisal the Executive Officer and Benson the Shelter Manager of KSPCA:

  • Right now KSPCA is taking care of 141 dogs, 100 cats, 7 donkeys and 1 horse.
  • A few days ago they had 180 dogs but were able to find foster families for some of them.
  • It costs approximately $3,000 to feed the animals each month. This number gets bigger the more animals they are taking care of.
  • Medicine is very expensive in Kenya and many animals at KSPCA need a lot of help.  They are brought to KSPCA starving or after being hit by cars and it costs a lot to help them.
  • It costs approximately $2,000 per month for vaccines and medicine.
  • They have an ambulance and will come and get animals that have been hurt or are being treated badly.
  • They have a full time veterinarian that fixes and treats the animals.
  • They have lots of different places for the animals to rest while they heal or play when they are up to it.
  • They let the animals stay for as long as they need and will take care of them forever.

This is one of the house dogs that has been at KSPCA for a long time and is allowed to roam around free.

Benson is the Shelter Manager and loves his job. He showed me the ambulance and told me how they rescue any animal in danger.

The KSPCA vet hard at work!

Feisal is the Executive Officer and he told me all about KSPCA. He says he loves how passionate everyone at KSPCA is and how good it feels to see animals heal after coming in in bad shape.

I am asking you to please donate to KSPCA.  100% of the money I raise, except for the fees on Fundly, will go to KSPCA so they can make sure all of the animals have what they need.

Thank you so much. I hope you can help me help KSPCA. Every little bit helps!

From,

Odin

Update #2

Update #2: I realized that my goal of $15,000 was a bit much. I am not giving up on it but I am going to try and research some famous people who love animals and see if any businesses want to give us some money. My new goal for people is $5,000 because that would let us get food and medicine for a whole month. We are close!
