I am raising money for PROSTATE CANCER UK. 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their life and last year my Dad was one of them. He's been one of the lucky one's, but more awareness and funding is needed.
Last year my Dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer. A fit, strong and healthy man who had worked every day of his life and was now excited about his retirement. It was a shock to everybody but his recovery wasn't. He was going to beat this. And he did.
1 in 8 men in the UK will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and every 45 minutes a man in the UK dies from it. Most symptoms arrive too late. The check is easy and takes 1 minute. My brothers and I now have a more than 1 in 4 chance of developing prostate cancer and this will be the case for many other men in the UK whose Fathers have had it.
I'm taking on this challenge as a respect to my Dad and as a celebration of my life and fitness, something I don't take for granted. In doing that I hope to encourage more men to get checked and to raise some much needed funding for research and treatment.
From the 5th-10th July, I am running and hiking an average of 20 miles per day for 5 days straight, across the island of Dominica. A 115 mile, on foot traverse of the entire island from bottom to top.
The trial has no footpaths. I will be with a small team chopping heavy bushwhack with machetes as we go. It will be wet, with slippy rocks, river crossings, steep climbs...and we will be feeding from ration packs and sleeping in hammocks under the dense canopy. The final day, day 5, with heavy legs, little sleep and no reserve energy, we will be running the equivalent of a marathon!
Bring it on!!
Thank you for your support! Together we WILL beat cancer!
